NABVETS-San Diego Chapter #72

NABVETS-San Diego Chapter #72 We work to provide a “Better Life” for active duty service members, veterans and their families. We are a resource for expert and professional services.

Our mission is to provide a “Better Life” for veterans, active-duty service members, and their families, by assisting them in receiving the compensation, benefits and services that each has rightfully earned and deserve. We support veterans by assisting them with the initial processing of claims for compensation and other veteran benefits. We provide outreach and networking opportunities to involv

e the veteran and the community. Our networking events provide the opportunity for veterans to come together, talk, share, and know they are not alone. We meet on the second Saturdays of the month at 11:00 a.m. Our meetings are open to the public. Contact us for more information.

Our NABVETS-San Diego Chapter #72 has two pages. We want to merge the two. Can anyone help with doing that? I read the instructions to do it, but it ain't working. There are two different administrators, and one of them can not remember login or any information for the older page. We want to merge https://www.facebook.com/pjaesr0747/
with https://www.facebook.com/nabvetssandiego72/
Thanks in advance if you can help us or know someone who can. Thanks.

Too many are exhausted, overwhelmed, having severe stress, depression, and hurting financially while trying to navigate benefits and resources on their own. Many caregivers reduce work hours or leave jobs completely to care for the veteran they love. NABVETS San Diego is hosting a special Zoom event that may help ease the burden.
If you are a spouse, dependent, survivor, or caregiver of a veteran, you may qualify for benefits, programs, resources or support you never knew existed. Please don’t miss this important Zoom event on May 30.

Colonel Fred Vann Cherry (1928–2016) was a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot and the first, highest-ranking Black officer held as a prisoner of war (POW) during the Vietnam War. Shot down on October 22, 1965, he endured over seven years of captivity, suffering severe injuries and torture, before his release in February 1973.

Key Details of Col. Fred Cherry's Service:

Capture and Imprisonment: Flying an F-105 Thunderchief, Cherry was shot down over North Vietnam. He spent 7.5 years as a POW, becoming known for his resilience and resistance, and was awarded the Air Force Cross for his actions.

POW Experience: Despite being severely injured during his ejection, Cherry was denied medical treatment by his captors and subjected to intense abuse. He formed a close bond with fellow POW Porter Halyburton, who helped care for him.

Military Career: A career officer, Cherry served in the Korean War and was a pilot for 29 years before retiring as a Colonel in 1981.
Legacy: He was a recipient of the Air Force Cross, two Purple Hearts, the Silver Star, and two Distinguished Flying Crosses. In 2026, he is remembered as a trailblazing officer and a hero of the Vietnam War.
