✨ A special thank you to ¡Flamenco! Santa Barbara and Flamenco Arts Festival Flamenco Arts Festival) for bringing the incredible guest artist José Cortés to San Diego! ❤️

These two Santa Barbara-based nonprofit organizations collaborated to bring this fabulous flamenco singer to the area for a series of events. Thanks to their collaboration, we were thrilled to welcome José to our Flamenco Íntimo at Charade! 💃🔥

THIS SUNDAY! Flamenco Intimo at Charade proudly highlights our Artistic Director, Curator and main dancer 💃🏻Lakshmi Basile, nicknamed “La Chimi”, is an international flamenco dancer and instructor. Her flamenco career was based in Sevilla, Spain, performing daily as a soloist and living amongst the flamencos there. “La Chimi” won the two most important national prizes; the Concurso de las Minas de La Unión, and the Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco de Córdoba.

In recent years, she founded nonprofit organization Alma Flamenca, based in San Diego, California. She is the curator, artistic director and main dancer for Flamenco Intimo at Charade. With the support of Alma Flamenca, she brings in guest artists regularly and maintains an affordable show for all to enjoy!

Carolyn Lieberman has been studying and performing dance since she was a child. She discovered flamenco 25 years ago and became obsessed with understanding flamenco compás. She performed regularly as part of the Costa Brava restaurant flamenco show in San Diego. She has been studying with Lakshmi Basile for the last six years and is grateful to be dancing for you this Sunday.

Andrés Vadin – Virtuoso Guitarist & Composer

Hailing from Havana, Cuba, Andrés Vadin is a highly skilled
guitarist, composer, and educator, blending flamenco, Cuban, Classic, and world music. A prodigious talent, he trained at the Guillermo Tomás and Amadeo Roldán Conservatory, winning his first major guitar competition at age 12. His dynamic career includes collaborations with Billy Cobham,Antonio Carmona (Ketama), Co**ha Buika, Yasmin Levy, JoseAntonio Rodríguez, Faramarz Aslani, Aleph Abi Saad among others. His contributions to Cuba le canta a Serrat and Bajo Mundo albums earned Latin Grammy nominations.

Andrés has toured globally, gracing renowned festivals such as WOMAD, Glastonbury, Montreal International Jazz Music
Festival among others. He has recorded film soundtracks (The Wale of a Tale, Bel Canto,Breaking the Silence) and performed at Steve Vai’s Big Mama Jamathon alongside Al Di Meola and Orianthi. Andrés also leads The Andrés Vadin Project, where he showcases his original compositions infused with Cuban, Arabic, and jazz influences. His performances have graced stages at prestigious flamenco festivals such as Flamenco Arts Festival (FAF), SB Acoustic among others. Additionally, he performs with Beyond Carmen, a project blending classical music, opera,
and Ladino influences. In collaboration with mezzo- soprano
Audrey Babcock, he has performed at the Opera Festival in
Utah, Opera Delaware, and other renowned venues.
Andrés Vadin is endorsed by Godin Guitars, Fishman
Amplifiers and Shubb Capos.

Flamenco Intimo at Charade, Alma Flamenca proudly presents October’s sponsored guest artist José Cortés Fernández
Born in the south of France in 1974 from an important gypsy family from Almería. At the age of ten, Jose began his career in Jerez de la Frontera where he won the “premio del joven aficionado del cante flamenco,” accompanied on guitar by Terremoto hijo. He was immersed in the world of flamenco with the greatest artists, such as Terremoto, Pansequito, Camarón de la Isla, Moraito Chico and Tomatito. Since then, he has shared the stage with the best artists, including Belen Lopez, Alfonso Losa, Juan Ogalla , Mara Martinez, Andrés Peña, Pilar Ortega, David Paniagua, Juañares , Nino de los Reyes, Jesus Carmona, Isaac de los Reyes, Belen Maya, Maria Juncal, Domingo Ortega, Co**ha Jareño, carmen ledesma, pol vaquero , el rapico and many more.

Jose was invited to be Antonio Carmona’s (Ketama) backup singer at the Nokia Theater for the Eva Longoria’s Foundation and he had the honor to sing for the San Francisco Opera in « Giselle ».

Since 2014 Jose has worked with the Aspen Ballet Juan Siddi Company with whom he toured in Hawaii, New Mexico and had the honor to perform at the Joyce Theater in New York City.

An incredible and traditional artist, José Cortés Fernández surprises us now by taking a step forward in his conception of flamenco by making pure flamenco live alongside other genres.
