Following the devastating impacts of Cyclone Fytia earlier this year, recovery efforts at our Namoroka field camp are moving forward thanks to the incredible dedication and resilience of our team and community partners.

One of our first priorities has been rebuilding and strengthening the foundation for long-term sustainability at the site. In our nursery, we have now completed the construction of three germination beds and two planting beds, helping us continue habitat restoration and future planting efforts in the region. Our community gardens are also thriving once again, with onions, carrots, zucchinis, leeks, eggplants, lettuce, chives, cabbages, and peppers now under cultivation. We are especially encouraged by the success of our composting initiative, which has already proven highly effective. Because of this progress, we are now planning the creation of eight additional compost pits to further support sustainable food production and soil enrichment.

At the camp itself, major reconstruction efforts are underway. We have focused first on building tent shelters, along with a house for the guard and secure food storage facilities. Construction of the main field station, toilets, and showers is continuing steadily and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. While there is still much work ahead, these milestones represent an important step forward after an incredibly difficult period.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported Wildlife Madagascar and the Namoroka team during this recovery process. Together, we continue rebuilding stronger than before.

Teacher Karin Rieke from Blieskastel, Germany, and her incredible Chameleon Class turned International Chameleon Day into a meaningful conservation effort by organizing a community bake sale to support chameleon conservation. Generous bakers donated delicious cakes and muffins, and by the end of the day, every single treat was sold. The students raised $339 and proved that even small acts of kindness and creativity can make a real difference for wildlife. We are so inspired by their passion, teamwork, and commitment to protecting Madagascarโ€™s extraordinary chameleons!

there are 10 turtle and tortoise species that are native to Madagascar? Worldwide, turtles and tortoises are an important part of their ecosystems, but many are endangered. They face threats like habitat destruction, pollution, the illegal pet trade, and climate change.

That's why a day dedicated to them helps raise awareness and helps people discover what extraordinary animals they are! This day emphasizes the importance of conservation efforts to protect these ancient reptiles and their habitats. Wildlife Madagascar, in partnership with Turtle Survival Alliance, is taking action to do just that for the species that call Madagascar home.

It's time to celebrateโ€”or dare we say, "shell-ebrate" ๐Ÿ˜„โ€”turtles and tortoises!

On May 17, that dream officially became a reality. After more than two and a half years of planning, construction, problem solving, and determination, we proudly launched our volunteer program in partnership with The Great Projects.

This was not a small undertaking. It required installing a solar electrical system, building four volunteer bungalows, creating water systems, constructing an indoor and outdoor kitchen, dining hall, and fire ring gathering area, and countless other improvements to prepare La Mananara for guests.

And nowโ€ฆ they are here!

Our first volunteer cohort includes participants from South Africa, the UK, India, and Australia. Add in team members from the U.S., Spain, and Madagascar, and that means seven countries united to help save lemurs. During their time at La Mananara, volunteers will:
๐ŸŒณ Help restore rainforest habitat through reforestation work
๐Ÿ‘€ Assist with lemur monitoring and behavioral observations
๐Ÿ“‹ Participate in wildlife surveys, including chameleons and other endemic species
โœ๏ธ Support conservation education activities with local children
๐ŸŒฑ Help care for seedlings in our growing native tree nursery.

This is only the beginning, and we could not be more excited about the future of this program and what it can mean for the Critically Endangered species that call La Mananara home. Join us! Visit thegreatprojects.com to learn more.

While Linusโ€™s research focuses particularly on the aye-aye, the team is also collecting comparative data on other lemurs, reptiles, and owls.

This work is critically important because it helps document local knowledge, traditions, and perceptions surrounding wildlife while providing valuable baseline sociocultural data for communities adjacent to the park. By listening to and learning from local voices, research like this helps ensure that future conservation strategies are both culturally grounded and locally relevant.

We are so pleased she could be part of our volunteer program! During her time in the field, she assisted local guides with daily behavioral and ecological data collection on four species of diurnal lemurs, while also participating in surveys to monitor elusive nocturnal lemur species.

โ€œBoth teams at Camp Indri and Camp Varecia were incredibly welcoming, and I had a wonderful experience working alongside them in the forest,โ€ said Beatrice. โ€œThank you to Wildlife Madagascar for the opportunity, and congratulations to the entire team for the important work they are doing to conserve Madagascarโ€™s lemurs.โ€

Volunteer collaborations like these help strengthen long-term conservation initiatives while supporting biodiversity research and community-based conservation efforts in Madagascarโ€™s threatened forests.

What happens when passion, courage, and conservation come together? You help save a rainforest.

At Wildlife Madagascarโ€™s April Book Event, Dr. Patricia Wright captivated guests with stories from her groundbreaking work in Madagascar, where she rediscovered the greater bamboo lemur and discovered the golden bamboo lemur, a species previously unknown to science. Her work helped lead to the creation of Ranomafana National Park in 1991.

Dr. Wright also shared the personal side of conservation including the challenges, sacrifices, and unwavering determination required to protect endangered species and habitats. Her presentation was both deeply moving and incredibly inspiring. We are deeply grateful to her for sharing her remarkable journey and for her unwavering commitment to the wildlife and people of Madagascar.

Countdown to Chameleon Day continues! Here's another chameleon species to try your identification skills on.
Clues:
๐ŸฆŽ This species is not from Madagascar - it is native to woodlands and wet forests in south-central Kenya and northern Tanzania.
๐ŸฆŽ Its genus name is derived from Greek, meaning โ€œthree horns.โ€
๐ŸฆŽ Unlike most chameleons which are oviparous, this species is viviparous, giving birth to live, developed offspring.
๐ŸฆŽ This species is popular within the exotic pet trade, which has led to introduced (and sometimes invasive) populations in Florida, Hawaii, and California.
