Dear friends,
I wanted to share an important update. After a great deal of thought I have decided to suspend my campaign for California State Senate. When I took on this responsibility I was fully committed which makes this even more challenging. I care deeply about our community, and stepping back feels, in many ways, like I’m letting people down. I am incredibly grateful for the encouragement, generosity, and kindness so many of you have shown throughout this journey.

Along the way, I’ve met so many amazing people who are selflessly supporting communities across San Diego County every day. Thank you for continuing to inspire me and reminding me what truly matters. Your support has meant more than I can express.

Right now, I need to focus on personal and family priorities that require my full attention. While I know this is the right choice at this moment, it is still very hard to step back from work that I deeply believe in.

However, my commitment to our community—and to the issues many of us care so much about—including quality public education, better access to healthcare and supporting working families, remains as strong as ever. I look forward to continuing to serve, advocate, and stay engaged, and I’m grateful to have you alongside me in that work.

Thank you for your friendship, your support, and your belief in me.

With profound appreciation,
Sabrina

Honored to attend a fundraiser at Congressmember Juan Vargas’ home this evening home in support of my school board colleague and friend Richard Barrera who is running for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. He is an incredible leader in the education field and by far the strongest and most qualified candidate in the race.

I’m excited to announce that I am running for California’s 40th State Senate District!

I join the race with 5 years as an incumbent on the San Diego Unified School Board and 30 years’ experience as a public health educator.

This campaign is also personal: after losing my husband Dave to brain cancer, I’m fighting for better health care access and stronger support for families.

I’m committed to strengthening California’s efforts to fight Trump’s attacks on public education and cutbacks in health care.

Yesterday started with a visit to Dingeman Elementary in Scripps Ranch to recognize one of our hardworking teachers who was nominated by his student for a district Love Notes award. Then to the ribbon cutting at our brand new beautiful STEAM lab and student garden also in Scripps Ranch. I also made a stop at Whitman Elementary in Clairemont to meet with the principal and our area superintendent. I always love hearing about all the amazing work our district staff is doing on behalf of our students.

I just recently returned from an urban schools leg update in DC during an extremely tough time in our country for public education. I was proud to be joined by school board and staff leaders that represent some of the largest districts nationwide as we continue to be a strong voice for students, particularly those most vulnerable. Thank you to the staff at Congressmembers Vargas, Jacobs and Peters offices as well as Senator Adam Schiff for taking the time to meet with us and continuing to fight on our students’ behalf at a time when they need us the most. ❤️

I've just arrived in DC to collaborate with urban school board leaders, superintendents, and staff from across the country. San Diego Unified receives almost $170 million annually in federal government funding. Let's be clear: Only by working together will we be able to protect the right to a quality public education, particularly for our most vulnerable student populations. On Monday, we'll be meeting with our congressional representatives to share why the proposed dismantling of the Department of Education would be disastrous. I encourage everyone who cares about protecting public education to join me in contacting their state and federal elected representatives to express their support for our students and public school communities. By speaking with one voice, we can create a more hopeful future for all our students.

Today I was excited to announce the opportunity for San Diego Unified teachers to apply for housing grants in area 5 of the city. Thank you to Councilmember Von Wilpert and her staff for offering access to our hardworking and committed educators who qualify for this program to become homebuyers in this extremely high cost market.

I proudly celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy this weekend at the downtown parade on Sunday and a breakfast at Balboa Park this morning. May his courageous legacy inspire us to fight for justice during the trying times ahead. We need to honor his memory, not just with words, but through our actions every day.

Yesterday I attended the One Book One San Diego event sponsored by KPBS at Crawford High School where we heard from award winning author Derrick Barnes. He shared the story he wrote about Tommie Smith at the 1968 Olympics, fastest man in the world at that time, who bravely raised his fist in the Black Power salute on the gold metal stand to show support for the Civil Rights Movement. He was the first athlete to do this so publicly at great risk to his personal safety and he remains a symbol of hope for people worldwide. We also heard from Jackie Smith who was the first African American woman from San Diego to win a gold medal. It was incredibly inspiring and I was honored to be a part of this special program.
