Voices for Children Voices for Children provides volunteer CASAs (Court Appointed Special Advocates) to foster children

We believe that every child deserves a safe and permanent home, and to that end, will provide a volunteer CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) to every child in the foster care system who needs one, monitor every court file in the system, and advocate to improve the lives of foster children in San Diego and Riverside Counties.

This past week, Voices for Children team members had the honor of attending the 2026 California CASA Association State Conference in Costa Mesa.

Centered on the theme โ€œComing Together, Shaping Our Collective Impact,โ€ the conference brought colleagues from CASA programs across the state together to connect, exchange best practices, and find inspiration in our shared commitment to serving children living in foster care.

At the conference, Voices for Children presented three sessions highlighting innovative approaches to advocacy:

๐ŸŒŸ Managing Director Riverside County, Sharon Morris along with Amanda Szydlowski, Distance Advocacy Specialist shared how analysis of our youth waiting list led to the development of a new distance advocacy model. This model gives youth the traditional CASA experience while providing enhanced support.

๐ŸŒŸ Juvenile Justice Program Manager Kelly Grant Jones and CASA Bruce M. explored how CASAs can help bridge the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, using the HOPE framework to strengthen protective factors and build resilience among crossover youth.

๐ŸŒŸ Program Manager Victoria Valencia and Jazmine Miles, Volunteer Recruitment & Training Associate led an informative session that dived into the topic of bias and privilege and how CASAs can work to identify their privilege and potential biases as they step into new communities and spaces in their advocacy work.

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from our statewide CASA community and return home with new ideas and renewed energy to strengthen our impact together.

September is National Kinship Care Month! ๐Ÿ’™ At Voices for Children, we value family.

When a child enters the foster care system, the risk of losing their siblings, school, and support system is very real. Thatโ€™s where a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer makes a life-changing difference.

CASA volunteers play a crucial role by helping to uncover and foster vital family connections with siblings, family relatives, or close family friends. Whenever safely possible, they advocate passionately for children to be placed with relatives or "fictive kin," knowing that keeping children rooted in familiar connections provides unmatched comfort and stability during an incredibly uncertain time.

Join us in showing immense gratitude to all the kinship caregivers in our community who step up to provide normalcy, connection, and stability!

"Debbie is helping me learn to trust adults again." -Tim โœจ

When a child enters foster care, they face a whirlwind of shifting homes, schools, and caseworkers. But a CASA volunteer serves as a consistent, trusted adult who steps in to advocate fiercely for their best interests.

Since 2024, CASA Debbie has been an unwavering champion for her 13-year-old youth, Tim*. When he faced shifting placements, school challenges, and unexpected letdowns, CASA Debbie stood firmly by his side. From driving 3 hours round-trip for biweekly visits to fighting for his educational rights and bringing crucial insight to the judge, CASA Debbie has shown Tim that he matters, he is worthy of kindness, and he is not alone.

Today, Tim is in a safer placement, getting back on track in school, and learning to trust again, with CASA Debbie still firmly by his side.

Congratulations to our San Diego County CASA of the Month, Janet! ๐Ÿฅณ Before entering foster care, 11-year-old Makenna* was carrying adult responsibilities, acting as the primary caregiver for her toddler brother. Forced to grow up, she rarely had the chance to experience the carefree joy of just being a child.

That changed when she met her Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), Janet. When an opportunity arose for Makenna to attend an equestrian sleepaway camp, CASA Janet made it her personal mission to ensure she didn't miss it. Even when an unexpected move to an emergency shelter threatened to ruin the plans right before departure, CASA Janet spent countless hours clearing administrative hurdles, organizing medical forms, and arranging transport so Makenna could step away from adult worries and just be a kid for a week. ๐Ÿด ๐Ÿ•๏ธ

Thank you, CASA Janet, for proving to youth in foster care that their happiness is worth fighting for!
