๐Ÿ“ข Calling all California coastal jurisdictions!

Recently, two of our team members at Coastal Quest, Emma Koeze (Director) and Tara Robinson (Program Coordinator), attended two San Diego events to share about the Senate Bill 1 (SB 1) ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—น ๐—”๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฃ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—š๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—บ and how Coastal Quest can support with your applications for funding! ๐ŸŒŠ

First, Tara tabled at the ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐——๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ผ ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—–๐—น๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—จ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฅ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ธ & ๐—œ๐—ป๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ฆ๐—ผ๐—น๐˜‚๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฆ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ป ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฎ ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป in order to connect with prospective TA applicants for SB 1 and encourage them to apply for grant funding for their respective coastal projects.

Then, Emma gave a presentation at the ๐—–๐—น๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐——๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ผ ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป to more closely map the ways in which we can support each jurisdiction to submit an application.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Shout out to our fiscally sponsored project, Ninth Root!ย

Founded by Tamila โ€œShyโ€ Walker, Ninth Root is a community-based organization in Oakland that curates and designs projects to provide climate-resilient, culturally relevant, outdoor sanctuaries for underrepresented residents to restore their connections with nature, mental wellness, and spirituality.

Currently, Ninth Root is working hard on the ๐ŸŒฑ Sacred Spaces Project located at the Martin Luther King, Jr. shoreline. Ongoing initiatives for the project include Shell Haven: Olympia Oyster Habitat Restoration Initiative and BloomNation: Oakland Shoreline Native and Invasive Plant Program.ย

Throughout the year, Ninth Root has been hosting engagement events that educate the community about nature-based solutions and ๐ŸŒŠ sea level rise adaptation. These events also elicit feedback from community members on what is important to them and what they would like to see at the Sacred Spaces Project.โ€จโ€จStay up-to-date with all they have going on by giving them a follow .

This project is made possible through a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, with support from the Greenlining Institute and San Francisco Bay Restoration Authority.โ€จโ€จ*****

Coastal Quest is working with partners to accelerate coastal solutions in the Bay Area, testing scalable models that allow community voices and leadership to drive climate resilience. Through grant writing, technical assistance, and small grant programs, we partner with counties, cities, and communities to get money on the ground to communities and governments, helping ensure inclusive, equitable sea level rise planning and adaptation solutions for people, nature, and climate.

๐Ÿ™Œ As a member of the implementation team for the Santa Clara County Climate Collaborative*, Coastal Quest recently led a panel on developing the Collaborative Resilience Fund and hosted breakout sessions at the fall in-person meeting.

Along with the County, Climate Resilience Communities, and Farallon Strategies, we kicked off a planning process to develop and pilot the Resilience Fund with seed planning funds from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation ().

๐Ÿ’ก Hereโ€™s a breakdown of theย  funding mechanism:

~ Support Strategic Plan โ€œImpact Areaโ€ outcomes
~ Secure sustainable financing
~ Pool funds and execute grant-making
~ Coordinate and convene resources
~ Build and increase the capacity of Collaborative membersโ€”especially community organizationsโ€”to achieve these outcomes

๐Ÿ“ฐ Stay tuned for more on how we grow this regional Resilience Fund together!

* The Collaborative is a county-wide network actively aligning a complex network of Santa Clara County stakeholders, amplifying the expertise of climate changemakers โ€” from community organizers to practitioners to policymakers โ€” and activating opportunities for impactful collaboration. Californians!

๐Ÿ“ˆRising sea levels threaten our coastal parks, with up to 75% of Californiaโ€™s beaches at risk of disappearing by 2100.ย

At Coastal Quest, we are dedicated to working with partners to build the capacity of community groups and local governments to fund and plan for community-driven coastal climate resilience.

Prop 4 funds critical sea level rise adaptation projects โ€” $50 million to safeguard our shores from erosion and damage and preserve these iconic landscapes for future generations.ย

Additionally, it provides $1.2 billion for the protection of coastal lands, bays, and oceans, $850 million for clean energy initiatives, and $300 million for agricultural support.ย

By voting YES on Proposition 4, you will be supporting natural resources and climate activities for generations to come.
