AI Paths brings to you the newest installment in our Speaker Series, where Mohamad Yassin meets with Leigh Yeh who shared insights about her job as an artificial intelligence engineer. She told Mohamad that her job functions included data science, software engineering, and some research and development; as for the machine learning and modeling part, she spent 70-80 percent of her time pre-processing the data, which included data cleaning and wrangling, exploratory data analysis (EDA), and making visualizations. Also, Leigh thinks that it’s very important for people in data science or tech to have experience in other fields. For instance, she had to study linguistics as part of her cognitive science major, which later helped her gain a better understanding of how to select features that were required to build natural language processing (NLP) models. We are very lucky to share with our fellows this industry perspective from Leigh this week.

In AI Paths newest installment in our Speaker Series, Mohamad Yassin asked Thom Ives about when he started working with data science. He said that the first time he used the least square approach to fit a dataset was in a physics lab in 1980. Tom started taking notice of neural networks and expert systems when he worked on advanced physics-based modeling and control system techniques. And over the years, he realized that there was so much value in the data being collected, so he decided to focus his efforts on data science. Now Thom is a lead data scientist for a global safety certification company. In addition, he is the founder of and a mentor at "Integrated ML & AI." Not to mention he has a bunch of remarkable achievements that include more than 26 U.S. patents. It was truly humbling to have Thom join us for this episode; thank you so much for sharing your data science insights with AI Paths’ fellows.

For AI Paths’ third episode in our Speaker Series, we had the insightful opportunity to speak with Edward Krueger. Edward spoke with our host Mohamad Yassin about his unique data science journey. He wanted to learn data science and software engineering because it provided him an opportunity to apply the math and statistics he learned at university to real world problems. Edward told Mohamad how the abundance of information and various digital resources helped him became a self-taught data scientist. And now, he is a senior data scientist, and an instructor of a data analytics and visualization bootcamp.

We were truly honored to meet with Evelina Di Corso during this exciting new installment in our AI Paths’ Speaker Series. And we can’t wait for our AI Paths’ fellows to watch it now!
During this episode, Mohamad Yassin asked Evelina about her advice for aspiring data scientists. She says: “I think that Albert Einstein is my mentor, because he said: I’m curious. So be curious!”
Evelina’s academic career began at the Politicnico De Torino as a mathematical engineer. Then she completed her PhD in Computer and Control Engineering, focusing on data mining. After academia Evelina transitioned into industry as a data scientist at Banco del Piomonte in Northern Italy. Now she utilizes machine learning and data mining for marketing and customer segmentation. Evelina said that the nature of her data science work was quite different between academia and industry. The processes were longer and more complex in industry. And new skills are usually developed after school.
