Today we said farewell to our matriarch horse, Obsidia 🖤

She transitioned on the first day of the Fire Horse year, a day symbolizing power, movement, and transformation. We don’t take that lightly. Fire clears. Fire transforms. The Horse carries spirit between worlds.

Animals shape the energy of a ranch more than people realize. Obsidia shaped ours. If you’ve ever visited S&S Friendly Ranch and felt grounded out there she was part of that feeling.

At S&S Friendly Ranch, we believe the land remembers. And we believe our animals are not separate from the ecosystem of this place. Obsidia taught us steadiness. Leadership without noise. Strength without force. She was steady, wise, and deeply rooted in this land. For many of us, she was the first horse we learned from.

We are grieving, and we are grateful.

This gathering brings our community together for:
• Youth ranch activities, games, crafts, gardening, and time with the animals
• Volunteer opportunities supporting hands-on activities
• Food, music, and cultural performances
• A short program highlighting the year’s work through the lens of Ujima
• A Kwanzaa lesson and candle lighting ceremony

Ujima reminds us that our growth, challenges, and victories are shared. This is a moment to celebrate what we’ve built and recommit to the work ahead.

🌿✨ Our Roots of Love gathering earlier this year reminded us of the beauty and strength that blooms when community comes together. We are deeply grateful for every person who has supported and poured into this work.

As many of you have heard, Frank will be moving up north to begin an exciting new chapter. Frank has been such a steady presence at the ranch, pouring his heart into the land and into our community. While we’ll miss his consistent presence dearly, we celebrate this new journey for him with gratitude for all the seeds he has planted on our families ranch and in all of us.

This is not an ending, just a shift. Our nonprofit team is adjusting and creating new ways to serve and nurture our community. The heart of this work remains the same, and our commitment to it is unwavering.

Thank you for continuing to walk with us. The roots we’ve planted together are only growing deeper. 💛
