I joined Everhome because of my experience growing up in Lebanon during the civil war. I felt that, as someone who was displaced myself, I could help people from the Middle East to resettle here and feel more at home. ~Lina, Everhome partner, translator, and beloved Aunty to the Syrian community

“We ( Everhome) exist because we want people who have been displaced and have resettled here in our country to find a new home here. . . . I don’t just mean a physical home. . . But a home where they feel loved, accepted, and wanted.” -Jody Crimi, Everhome Director

"As the children of immigrants experience growing up in a completely different environment from their parents, they find themselves balancing two ways of life-—the way of their parents, and that of the culture around them. They feel that they no longer fully belong in the traditional world of their parents, nor to the western culture they are now immersed in, and this significantly affects their identities as they long for a place of belonging and acceptance.

Everhome recognizes this internal struggle as we come alongside the Syrian-American community. We encourage the youth in a variety of ways, including supporting our high school seniors as they apply for college, providing a safe environment\group for the teenage girls to express themselves, tutoring, self-care and beauty classes, and much more. Through these efforts, Everhome's vision is not only to help them process these internal struggles, but to enable them to build a future rich in culture and a unique sense of belonging."

“One of the simplest, yet most important and fulfilling, purposes of Everhome is to welcome and build lasting friendships with our friends who are refugees. They have come a long way and have been through remarkable tragedy, yet their basic human desires are the same as ours: to be accepted, loved, heard, and valued. We want our friends to know that even in a place that is vastly different than where they came from, they have a community to walk with them through both the struggles and the joys. Whether they are learning English, moving homes, or celebrating marriage and new life, we are there as their lives continue to grow and blossom despite the physical and emotional hardships they’ve suffered."

Listening to stories of hardships and heartbreak is never easy, but it has a very important place in the healing process for the storyteller. Sometimes we as listeners may feel incredibly small and inadequate. Sometimes we carry the burden of anger and tears along with the storyteller. Nevertheless, we listen, not to know information, or out of curiosity, but because the need to be heard is found in every person, no matter the level of pain they’ve endured. We listen to bring value to that person, to let them know that they matter.

“One day, after I had just arrived in America, I was walking down the street when I tripped and
fell. I wasn’t able to get up easily by myself and I was so shocked and surprised that not one
person stopped to help me!”

One of the most difficult things that one of our dear Syrian Friends encountered after
immigrating to San Diego was how many people ignore those in need, including her! A transition so different from the tight-knit community she was used to in the Syria where there was no walking by or averting eyes. The struggles of others were theirs to comfort.

As we continued to talked with this mother and daughter, you could see the pride in their eyes as they told us a story of a Syrian woman who was new
in San Diego. She had enough assistant for an apartment but there was no food to feed her
children. This need was circulated around the Syrian refugee community and by the end of
the day, the lady had to start calling people and tell them to please stop any more people
from bringing food because she no longer had room for it. She even remarked that her house
looked like a small grocery store after all the food donations her community had dropped off.

The Syrians bring with them not only their language, culture and religion, but their love,
responsibility and generosity. What an opportunity it is when we can enter these cross
cultural encounters as learners. Instead of holding on to an individualistic mindset that shrinks
our perception of our responsibility and lets us believe that someone else will help, we are
challenged to be that someone else. Isn’t that a lovely picture of loving your neighbor as yourself?

“Leave footprints of love and kindness wherever you go.”

This was the first painting we did with our girls group over Zoom. And the moment we knew we had to do it again!
