Too often children are abused because an adult even a parent not only failed to take action, they decide that the child was lying. "This case illuminates a fundamental principle that every youth organization, staff member, and volunteer must understand: Our role is not to determine the credibility of a child’s disclosure. Our role is to report it."

"Reasonable suspicion, not proof, is the standard" for making a report to appropriate authorities, typically child protective services or law enforcement. Thank you to Deborah Ausburn for this article.

A few weeks ago, a judge in Braxton, WV, sentenced Robin James for failing to act on a child’s disclosure. James received the maximum sentence of 4 to 40 years in prison for child neglect after admitting she made “no moves to protect” a minor in her care because she didn’t believe the child....

On Martin Luther King Day, his message has never been more needed. He also said, "That which you do not hate, you'll eventually tolerate." Today is the day to reflect on the pain that children feel in foster care. They deserve so much better, and it is up to all of us as a society to ensure that we do not tolerate the terrible conditions that these children endure and focus on getting each children into a forever family.

Police said a boy, Gavin Peterson, died from abuse in his own home, despite repeated concerns expressed over his wellbeing.

Four lawmakers — Senators John Johnson and Luz Escamilla, and Reps. Christine Watkins and Cheryl Acton — said legislation is in the works to makes changes to DCFS that could speed up its intervention when questions arise over the wellbeing of children.

"Well, we do have our legislative auditors," said Sen. Escamilla, Salt Lake City, and Senate Minority Leader. "I would have to see what that looks like. I don't know if we do independent investigations on other state agencies."

Rep. Watkins of Carbon County and oversight panel co-chair also said it's time for a legislative audit of DCFS.

Relatives play an essential role for children in , looking after them when they can’t live safely at home with parents, and keeping extended families intact when the government intervenes. But when they appear in the family courts amid lawyers representing case workers, parents and children, they typically stand alone, with no attorney to guide them.

“Kin need to engage in concurrent planning from day one — they must work to help the parents and children maintain a healthy relationship, have frequent contact, and work towards reunification — but also consider and plan for all the child’s permanency options if the child cannot be safely returned home."

The current language proposes an $8 million fund. The money would be distributed to nonprofit legal groups who can represent the interests of kin in family court hearings.

Supporters of the new fund point to the critical role relatives play in the foster care system. State and federal laws prioritize them for temporary placements, guardianships and adoptions. And social science research shows improved outcomes for children removed from home who move in with people who know and love them, rather than strangers.

These North Texas sisters, 11-year-old Have'Ana and 9-year-old Layla, are in need of a loving to adopt them and, most importantly, a family that will keep them together.

Layla, the younger of the two sisters is full of energy and love for her big sister, Have'Ana. "She's like a mom. She helps me, and she helps me when I need stuff that I forget," said Layla. Have’Ana is smart and carries on a conversation with ease. She’s also very polite, kind, and confident.

Being a big sister is a role she takes seriously but also enjoys. "Layla can't make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, so I make it for her. Also, she's not very good at Math so I help her with that too." I want a family to play with me and I want a phone.”

Layla knows exactly what she wants to hear from her adoptive parents. "I love you."

Nearly 3,000 children are currently in South Carolina’s . Middle Tyger Community, in partnership with the state's foster care agency, is spearheading the program called Kinship Care, designed to place children in the care of relatives rather than in the formal foster care system.

“We want our children to go where they’re comfortable. They’ve just experienced a traumatic event, whether that’s the death of a parent or other difficult circumstances.”

“They’re going to look at age, the condition of the home, and other factors to ensure it’s a place where the child feels safe and supported.”

The Kinship Care program serves 11 counties in the upstate, offering not only placement but also ongoing support for caregivers. Families are provided with resources such as school supplies, clothing, and emotional support, including access to support groups and mental health counseling.
