This week, we had the pleasure of celebrating the incredible nonprofit partners who help make our mission possible!

Our Nonprofit Partner Appreciation Luncheon was an opportunity to recognize the dedication of our partners and express our gratitude for the important work they do every day to support communities throughout San Diego County.

Through their partnership, we are able to connect individuals and families with nutritious food and essential resources. We truly couldn't do this work without their dedication, compassion, and commitment to serving our community.

Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the histories, cultures, traditions and contributions of Indigenous communities throughout our region.

For Grandma Ann of Campo, caring for her community has long been a part of everyday life. A mother of four and grandmother of eight, Ann has spent years helping bring food to family members, elders and neighbors who may not have transportation or are unable to make the trip themselves.

“They’re always very grateful because every little bit helps,” Ann shares.
Across San Diego County, the San Diego Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry Program visits the La Posta, Campo, Manzanita and Jamul reservations, providing fresh produce, dry goods, diapers and other essential resources.

Today and throughout the year, we recognize the strength, traditions and care that continue to shape Indigenous communities across our region.

This past Saturday, we were proud to take part in San Diego Climate Week by bringing together community leaders, partners and volunteers for a day focused on sustainability, local food and community impact.

We kicked off the day with “Local Food, Local Solutions,” a panel discussion exploring the role local food systems can play in building a more sustainable and resilient San Diego. The conversation featured Amy Eilts, Sr. Director of Programs at the San Diego Food Bank; Jill Galante of Helping Empower Community Refugees; Matt Kissel, General Manager of Foodshed Small Farm Distro & Resource Hub; and Michael Catalano, Director of Food Sourcing at the San Diego Food Bank.

Guests also got a behind-the-scenes look at our warehouse and sustainability efforts, including food recovery through our Fresh Rescue program, composting, recycling and other initiatives that help reduce food waste.

We wrapped up the day with a hands-on volunteer shift, giving attendees an opportunity to turn conversation into action and support our mission firsthand.

Building partnerships that move families from hunger to hope.

The San Diego Food Bank was proud to participate in the Cause San Diego, joining leaders from across our region for an important conversation about nutrition insecurity and the power of collaboration in addressing it.

Julie Moore, VP of Corporate & Community Engagement, moderated a panel featuring Josue Castro, Direct Services Manager, alongside Courtney Pendleton of Mission Fed Credit Union and Maria Gamboa of Casa Familiar. Together, they discussed the realities facing families and seniors and how nonprofits, businesses and community organizations can work together to move families from hunger to hope.

This week, we joined Bank of America, Goodwill Industries of San Diego County, and San Ysidro Health for a special Hunger Awareness Month food distribution in San Ysidro, providing fresh produce and nutritious food to local families.

We’re proud to work alongside organizations committed to serving our South County community and connecting our neighbors with food, employment opportunities, health resources and financial education.

A meaningful way to close out Hunger Awareness Month.

Throughout September, the San Diego Food Bank was honored to receive proclamations and recognitions from leaders across our region in support of Hunger Awareness Month.

We were grateful to be recognized by Congressman Representative Mike Levin, Senator Senator Steve Padilla, Mayor Todd Gloria, the County of San Diego - Government Board of Supervisors and the San Diego City Council, each helping shine a light on hunger in our region and the importance of ensuring our neighbors have access to nutritious food.

Throughout Hunger Awareness Month, we were also proud to work alongside the San Diego Hunger Coalition to raise awareness and encourage our community to take action against hunger across San Diego County.

These recognitions and efforts reflect the collective commitment of organizations, elected leaders, partners and advocates working toward a hunger-free San Diego.

As Hunger Awareness Month comes to a close, our work continues year-round. Together, we can continue raising awareness, taking action and supporting our neighbors across San Diego County.
