September is Su***de Prevention Month, and this conversation is personal for me.

I know what suicidal thoughts feel like.

When I was first prescribed Adderall, I experienced a period of persistent suicidal thoughts that eventually progressed to planning.

Yet, from the outside, I could still smile, laugh, work, show up and seem completely fine.

That experience taught me something I carry with me today:

Struggling doesn’t always look like struggling.

We often tell people, “Reach out if you need help.” But sometimes the person struggling doesn’t know how to reach out, doesn’t have the words, or has become incredibly good at appearing okay.

So reach in, too.

Ask the second question. Listen to understand instead of immediately trying to fix. Make room for an honest answer.

Not every interaction needs to become a coaching session or a therapy session.

Sometimes being genuinely present with another person is enough to remind them they don’t have to carry everything alone.

Plot twist: after a lot of thought, I’ve decided to shift my doctoral path from a PhD in Industrial-Organizational Psychology to a PsyD with a focus in Clinical Psychology.

Was changing programs this far into a doctorate mildly unhinged? Maybe and most people think I’m crazy, but it was also the right decision.

Thankfully, I’m not starting from scratch. A significant amount of my doctoral research and coursework will transfer, and I’ll also earn another MS in Industrial-Organizational Psychology through the transition, so the work I’ve already done isn’t disappearing into the academic abyss.

I-O psychology will always be a huge part of how I understand people, leadership, and organizations. Now I get to expand that lens further into clinical psychology and human behavior at the individual level.

More school was apparently the answer.

Nobody tell me how long I’ve been in college. 👁️🫦👁️
