• Speed: Pallet shelters can be assembled quickly, allowing cities to respond faster to urgent shelter needs.
• Cost efficiency: They are typically less expensive than traditional construction, stretching limited public funding further.

Sunstone Way, a nonprofit operating six homeless shelters in and near Portland, will lay off 175 people when it closes at the end of June, according to a notice issued Wednesday by Oregon’s dislocated worker unit.

Neither the city nor Multnomah County officials had any specific plan for the many workers who will be laid off, a significant number of whom are represented by a union.
