Six of our Fellows alumni recently had the opportunity to work with industry professionals and experience life in STEM firsthand at UC San Diego! During this two-week experience, SD2 partnered with UC San Diego's Goeddel Family Technology Sandbox to provide students with a real-world research experience, during which they ran their own mass spectrometry experiment. While working with cyanobacterial proteins, collecting unique data, and collaborating with Dr. Lisa Jones and Dr. Zhouxin Shen to interpret their results, these high school students got to learn about and use some of the world's most cutting-edge equipment and technologies, like the CryoEM facility at the Goeddel Family Sandbox, the Qualcomm Institute Clean Rooms, the Electron Microscopy room at UC San Diego, and the SOARS facility at SIO. In between lab sessions, students received personalized tours of college and research facilities, enjoyed panel discussions with STEM professionals and student support groups, and met with current graduate student researchers to learn about navigating school and research opportunities.
We're extremely proud of these Fellows for stepping into the researcher role, and are excited to see how they change the STEM industry. Swipe to see a glimpse of their time together!
