🐾 "It's just me and her. She's my world." ❤️

That's how Heather describes Bella Dawn.

For five years, Bella Dawn has been more than a dog, she's been Heather's best friend, constant companion, and family.

Then, one day, Bella Dawn stopped eating. She developed a fever, became weak, and didn't want to move. Heather rushed her from the emergency hospital to her veterinarian, where she received devastating news: Bella Dawn had pyometra, a life-threatening infection that required emergency surgery.

After the emergency visit and testing, Heather had spent nearly everything she had.

"It left me with 23 cents in my checking account," she shared.

When Bella Dawn's veterinarian introduced her to Sage Compassion for Animals, everything changed. Because of compassionate supporters and the care of her veterinary team, Bella Dawn received the lifesaving surgery she needed.

Today, she's back where she belongs home with the person who loves her most.

"You saved my baby girl. I will never forget that there are angels out there, people who care for complete strangers."

🐾 "Our pets are our adopted children."

That's how the Aguilar family describes Apollo Creed.

For them, Apollo isn't just a French Bulldog. He's family the one who brings laughter, comfort, and unconditional love into their home every day.

So when he suddenly began struggling to urinate, they knew something wasn't right.

What first seemed like a urinary tract infection turned out to be something much more serious. Apollo was diagnosed with a life-threatening urinary obstruction caused by urethral stones and needed emergency surgery to save his life.

Like so many families facing an unexpected veterinary emergency, the Aguilars did everything they could. They searched for answers, explored financing options, and contributed what they could toward Apollo's care.

When the remaining cost was still out of reach, the team at Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) connected them with Sage Compassion for Animals.

Because of compassionate supporters, Apollo received the lifesaving surgery he needed.

Today, he's back where he belongs safe at home with the family who loves him.

🐾 “Oreo isn’t just a pet... She’s family.”

Oreo, affectionately known as "Chubby," came into her family’s life on a rainy day as a tiny abandoned kitten. Despite her small size, she had a big personality from the very beginning.

Over the years, she grew into a chatty, sassy tuxedo queen who filled her home with joy. She especially loves "talking" with her uncle, it’s a bond so special that her family says they seem to have their own language.

Then, something changed.

Oreo began experiencing painful bladder stones, leaving her uncomfortable and making even simple things difficult.

“The unknown was the scariest part,” her family shared. “Knowing she was hurting but not being able to fully understand how much she was suffering weighed heavily on us.”

When surgery became necessary, the cost felt overwhelming. But thanks to support from Sage Compassion for Animals, Oreo was able to receive the care she needed.

Today, she’s back to being herself, chatty, affectionate, and bringing her signature sass to everyone around her.

Please join us in welcoming Lori Grange to our Board of Directors!

Lori brings more than 25 years of experience helping nonprofits and foundations create meaningful change. Throughout her career, she has advised philanthropic organizations, developed strategies to address complex social challenges, and helped nonprofits maximize their impact.

Just as importantly, Lori is a passionate animal advocate. She is a member and former board president of Animal Grantmakers, a network dedicated to advancing animal welfare, and shares her home with two very dog-like cats.

Her expertise in philanthropy and commitment to animal welfare will help Sage Compassion for Animals continue expanding our reach and helping more pets receive the urgent veterinary care they need to stay with the families who love them.

🐾 June is National Pet Preparedness Month 🐾

When emergencies happen, being prepared can make all the difference for you and your pet.

Take a few minutes this month to make sure you have:
-- Updated ID tags and microchip information
-- Copies of your pet's medical records
--A pet emergency kit with food, medications, and supplies
-- A plan for evacuation or temporary housing
-- Emergency contact information for your veterinarian

No one expects an emergency, but having a plan in place can help keep your pet safe and reduce stress when every minute counts.

🐾 After 13 years together, Widget’s story wasn’t ready to end.

For years, Widget had adapted to losing vision in one eye, continuing to enjoy life beside the person who loved him most. But when his eye suddenly ruptured and began to hemorrhage, everything changed.

At Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG), Widget’s owner learned he needed urgent surgery to relieve his pain and save his quality of life. Without financial support, she feared she was out of options.

“Without the help, I was looking at euthanasia,” she shared.

With support from Sage Compassion for Animals and the compassionate care of the VEG team, Widget received the surgery he needed. Today, he’s healing well, back home, comfortable, and still very much himself. 💛

🐾 We’re proud to share that Sage Compassion for Animals founders, Dr. Julie Smith and Dr. Lissa Richardson, were invited by the California Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) to present a continuing education seminar for veterinarians and veterinary teams across California.

Drawing from more than 25 years of experience as veterinary surgeons and the impactful work Sage Compassion for Animals has led over the past six years, they spoke about how veterinary teams can help provide compassionate, high-quality care to families facing financial barriers.

Their presentation focused on real-world strategies for supporting pets and the people who love them , ensuring that financial hardship doesn’t automatically mean losing access to lifesaving care.

We’re honored to contribute to these important conversations within the veterinary community and grateful to the CVMA for the opportunity to share Sage Compassion for Animals mission and experience with veterinary professionals statewide.
