San Diego Mineral & Gem Society Official page of the San Diego Mineral & Gem Society (SMDG). The collection has been assembled over the last 75 years through purchases and donations.

Founded in 1934, SDMG's mission is to disseminate knowledge of mineralogy and earth sciences; to encourage the study of these subjects; to conduct classes in mineralogy and lapidary arts; to conduct field trips for the collection and study of specimens; to encourage interest in mineralogy and lapidary arts among young people; and to procure and maintain a collection related to the earth sciences

and lapidary arts.. SDMG hosts Workshops led by our member volunteers who share their expertise through hands-on learning in Lapidary, Metals Fabrication and Gem faceting. Our current workshop schedule is posted online at:https://sdmg.org/class-schedule/class-schedule.pdf

Our museum is located in the SDMG building and features many fine mineral, gem, lapidary and fossil specimens from around the world. Admission to the Museum is free. The SDMG building is located at the northwest corner of Spanish Village in Balboa Park, between the San Diego Zoo to the north and the Natural History Museum to the south. Access from Village Place, with ample parking near Village Place and Park Blvd.. (Note: the road between Otto Center and Spanish Village is an alley with signage: "no pedestrians").

Twentieth Sinkankas Symposium: Gems & Minerals of Burma (Myanmar) -- Event and Publication Announcement (April 25, 2026)
Registration is now open for the Twentieth Sinkankas Symposium. Early bird rate applies through April 3rd, 2026. Last day to register is April 24, 2026. (No on-site registration.) Register online at: https://sinkankassymposium20.eventbrite.com

This year's symposium is sponsored by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the Geo-Literary Society. It will be held on April 25, 2026 at GIA's world headquarters in Carlsbad, California. The theme of the Twentieth Sinkankas Symposium is Gems & Minerals of Burma (Myanmar). The one-day event features 10 speakers on topics related to one of the most storied gem-producing regions of the world. This year's event and proceedings are dedicated to Professor George R. Rossman.

Space is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration includes one complimentary copy of the printed proceedings, morning and afternoon refreshments, and box lunch on-site. A reception in the GIA rotunda follows. The venue also features an exhibition of "Temples & Treasures of Southern Asia" and booksellers will have specialty publications on gem and minerals available for purchase.

Dept of Interior (DOI) leaders will host a meeting on resource management in California deserts including plans for national monuments. Agenda includes proposed Chuckwalla National Monument. A good time to ask about ETA for Mojave Trails. Rockhounds, please a take this RARE opportunity to tell DOI in person your concerns about being able to continue casual collecting on public lands including national monuments. This is an important meeting.
