The hardest week is not always the first one in the NICU. Sometimes it is the first one at home. The monitors that beeped when something changed are gone. The nurses who knew your baby’s weight to the gram are gone. The schedule that told you when to feed, when to hold, when to call someone – gone. You are home with a baby who spent the beginning of their life in intensive care, and the silence is louder than anything that happened inside the hospital. Most support systems are designed for the NICU itself. Miracle Babies is designed for what comes after too.
Programs that follow you home because the need does not end at discharge. The baby is home. That is everything. It is also the beginning of a new and different hard thing, and you do not have to go through it without support.

Lily called us three weeks after her baby, Logan, was diagnosed with a rare chromosome disorder.

She had found us through a social worker, and she was not entirely sure why she was calling. The diagnosis was so specific that when she searched for community, she found a group with fewer than 400 members worldwide. She had spent three weeks feeling like she was the only person who had ever stood exactly where she was standing.

She was not. But no one had told her that yet.

We got her a ride to the hospital so she could stop spending money she did not have. We connected her with a clinician who already understood what she was walking in with. We told her about a Miracle Hour and invited her to come.

She came once. Sat in the back. Did not say much.

She came back. Logan came home in the spring. And later, when she had room to look back, Lily told us that the hardest part was never the diagnosis. It was feeling, in those first weeks, that the system could see her baby but not her.

She does not feel that way anymore.

Sickle cell disease affects about 100,000 people in the United States.

More than 90% of them are non-Hispanic Black or African American. About 1 in 365 Black or African American births is affected. (CDC.)

Many of these babies are born into the NICU. Many of their families are navigating a diagnosis that comes layered with a history of undertreated pain, of medical skepticism, of a healthcare system that has not always shown up for them.

This Friday is Juneteenth and World Sickle Cell Day.

Equitable access to NICU family support means showing up for the families carrying the most. Not just at the hospitals where referrals are easy, but at the ones where trust has to be earned, slowly, over time.

Miracle Babies serves families navigating sickle cell alongside prematurity. Care packages. Mental health support. Transportation. Miracle Hours. All at no cost. At 14 hospital partner sites across Southern California.

For years, if you were a NICU family in Orange County, Miracle Babies was a San Diego organization.

The baby might have been at UCI Medical Center or CHOC. The need was exactly the same: transportation, mental health support, community, someone to tell you that what you were feeling was real. But the programs were not there yet.

In February 2026, that changed. Miracle Babies launched free transportation services for NICU families at UCI Medical Center in Orange County, through a partnership with The Samueli Foundation and the Anaheim Ducks Foundation.

Orange County has more than 126 NICU beds across CHOC's three locations alone. That is a lot of families who needed what we were building.

We are glad it exists now.

June is National Congenital CMV Awareness Month, and I want to tell you what it actually looks like for a family.

A baby is born. They appear healthy. There is relief. Then, somewhere in the first days or weeks, something is flagged. A hearing screen. A scan. A result that requires a conversation no one prepared them for.

Congenital CMV is the most common infectious cause of birth defects in the United States. About 1 in 200 babies is born with it. About 1 in 5 will have birth defects or long-term health problems, including hearing loss. (CDC.)

Newborn testing must happen within two to three weeks of birth to confirm the diagnosis. Many families miss that window because no one told them to ask.

A California NICU study found that diagnosed cases represented only about 5% of expected symptomatic births. Most families are navigating this without a name for what their baby has, without a community, and without a referral to the support that exists.

Miracle Babies serves these families. We show up whether or not anyone told them to look for us.

There is a specific kind of therapy that NICU parents need, and most of them never find it.

Not because it does not exist. Because the therapist in their insurance network has never sat across from someone who spent three months watching their baby’s oxygen monitor and learned to read their own body like a machine waiting to alarm.

Nearly 40% of parents with babies in the NICU experience clinically significant anxiety in the first month after birth. Nearly 40% experience symptoms of PTSD. (March of Dimes.) Those numbers do not disappear at discharge. They follow families home, into the moments that are supposed to feel normal and do not yet.

Miracle Babies connects NICU families with licensed clinicians who specialize in this specific experience. Not a general therapist who will work through it with them. A clinician who already understands what they are walking in with.

It is free. It is available during the NICU stay and after it.

Meet Margaret!

Margaret Giuffre joins the Miracle Babies team today as our Director of Fundraising and we could not be more excited to introduce her to you.

She grew up as one of ten children whose father spent 28 years as Chief of Orthopedics at Scripps Mercy Hospital. He brought his kids on rounds. She has understood hospital families her whole life, and she is here now to help us reach more of them.

The NICU has a structure to it.

Nurses. Monitors. A schedule. People who know your baby’s name and what they need.
Discharge is when that structure ends.

You go home with a baby who has been in intensive care, a stack of instructions, and the particular silence of a house that has been waiting for you. The diapers your baby needs are not always on the shelf at the store down the street. Premature and NICU babies often need specialty sizes that are hard to find and expensive when you do.

Miracle Babies runs a Baby Boutique and a diaper distribution program for exactly this moment. Clothing, formula, supplies, and diapers for NICU and premature babies, at no cost to families who are already carrying more than enough.

Because the practical gaps are real. And because a family that is not drowning in logistics has more room to simply be present for their baby.
