May 31st is World No To***co Day. This day is organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is an opportunity for public health advocates to talk about the harms caused by the to***co industry while encouraging to***co product users to quit. Some of the tactics the to***co industry uses to keep and attract new customers include:

- Flavoring and additives: enhance the taste and mask the harshness of to***co to increase its appeal;

- Targeted marketing: use sleek designs, attractive packaging, and digital media campaigns to glamorize harmful products; and

- Deceptive product design: create products that look like sweets or toys to appeal to children and adolescents.

Smoke-Free San Diego proudly represented the voices of local residents, community organizations, and the County of San Diego’s To***co Control Resource Program alongside hundreds of advocates at the California State Capitol. Together, we met with state representatives to discuss the harms caused by to***co use, the ongoing ni****ne crisis, and the urgent need to protect our communities from Big To***co’s influence.

We had the opportunity to meet with the Office of Akilah Weber Pierson, including Legislative Director Elizabeth Bojorquez, as well as the Office of Chris Ward, represented by Communications Director Anthony Reyes.

Thank you to Senator Akilah Weber Pierson, M.D. and Assemblymember Chris Ward and your incredible staff for taking the time to hear our concerns and discuss how we can continue working together to protect Californians from the leading cause of preventable death.

Did you know that the most littered item on Earth is cigarette butts? Despite popular belief, ci******es are not only made of paper and to***co. Cigarette butts are mostly made of plastic and take up to 10 years to break down. Ci******es also contain toxic chemicals like arsenic, lead, and ni****ne that harm our water and soil.
