Why does Greater Than Tech continue to invest intentionally in girls? Because the gender gap in tech didn’t disappear, and neither did the confidence gap that keeps so many girls from seeing STEM as a place they belong.

Research consistently shows that girls begin deciding whether STEM is “for them” as early as middle school. Access matters, but belonging matters too. That’s why our Career and Alumnae programs remain girls-focused: to create the mentorship, representation, and support systems that help girls build confidence, agency, and long-term pathways into tech.

As GTT has grown, so has our impact. Through our Community programs, underestimated boys also gain access to STEM experiences through our partner organizations.
We expanded our reach without abandoning our mission. 💙

Leilani, Olivia, and Evelyn joined Greater Than Tech through different programs, but the Alumnae Club brought them together, turning them into not just a great team, but great friends too. 💙

At Tech Over Tapas, they were recognized for their capstone project focused on homelessness and the stigma surrounding unhoused communities in San Diego.

Their project uses virtual reality to tell the story of a young person experiencing poverty, helping users better understand the challenges unhoused individuals face every day. Their goal is to create empathy, spark conversation, and encourage people to see homelessness through a more human lens.

Now, the team will be showcasing their project at MAVERiC Studio’s Night Market: The Year of the Game Master during Comic-Con week on Friday, July 24, from 5:00 PM–11:00 PM at Park & Market in Downtown San Diego.

Alongside startup founders, innovators, and creators, our students will share their VR experience with the community and showcase how young changemakers can use technology to address real-world challenges.

We are incredibly proud of Leilani, Olivia, and Evelyn for using their skills, creativity, and compassion to make a meaningful difference, and we can’t wait to see them continue to inspire others through their work. 🚀

July is bringing exciting opportunities for our students and alumnae to connect, explore, and engage with the broader STEM community. ✨

This month, Greater Than Tech will be present at several community events and programs across San Diego, including hands-on STEM experiences, leadership initiatives, and collaborative community gatherings designed to inspire the next generation of innovators.

We’re especially excited for opportunities where GTT alumnae will engage directly with students and community members, sharing projects, exploring new ideas, and showcasing how STEM, creativity, and technology come together to open new pathways.

We're grateful to have been selected as a nonprofit partner for LEAD San Diego's Impact 2026 initiative.

Over the past several months, a dedicated team of professionals worked alongside Greater Than Tech to conduct an in-depth assessment of our organization and develop recommendations to support our future growth and sustainability.

The final deliverables included strategic guidance on positioning, fundraising, communications, organizational development, board growth, and long-term sustainability.

One of the most valuable parts of this experience was having outside experts take a close look at our work, ask thoughtful questions, and help identify opportunities we can build on moving forward.

Thank you to the LEAD San Diego Impact team for your partnership, expertise, and commitment to strengthening nonprofits throughout our region. We are excited to put these insights into action and continue creating pathways from STEM education to STEM careers.

Mental health support doesn’t always look the way we expect it to.

Sometimes it’s therapy.
Sometimes it’s community.
Sometimes it’s reading something at the exact moment you needed it and feeling a little less alone.

Danielle-Elizabeth joined Greater Than Tech in 2024 through our cybersecurity program and has continued to demonstrate her dedication as she’s grown within GTT 💻✨ It’s been incredible to see her step into her voice and grow as a leader along the way.

She was awarded first place at Tech Over Tapas 2024 for her capstone project and returned this year alongside her team to present D.E.T.C, a virtual reality project designed to promote emotional and physical well-being for individuals who may lack access to resources. Their platform connects medical students seeking hands-on experience with patients in need of mental health support.

Learning how to use AI starts with knowing how to ask the right questions 💻

During our recent workshop, Nastasja T., engineer at Collins Aerospace, guided our alumnae through how to approach AI in school and professional settings.

They practiced building prompts with clear instructions and context, explored how AI tools are trained, and discussed how to check for bias, accuracy, and reliability when using these tools.

Our GTT Alumnae had the opportunity to attend the Scientella x QuidelOrtho 2026 STEM Career Exploration Event, an open space for junior high and high school girls to explore, ask questions, and learn directly from professionals in the field.

Experiences like this create access, spark curiosity, and expand what’s possible.

Grateful to be part of conversations that center growth, collaboration, and real impact. 🧡

At the Nonprofit Leadership & Governance Symposium, our cofounders Dr. Brittany Wheeler, Director of Education, and Jasmine LeFlore, Executive Director, joined the “Money Helps. Learning Together Sustains.” panel alongside fellow Equity Impact Grant recipients.

Through a more interactive, meet-and-greet style session, attendees had the opportunity to connect directly with organizations, learn about the work happening in their communities, and engage in meaningful dialogue.

Thank you to The Nonprofit Institute at USD and the County of San Diego for creating spaces that bring people together with intention.

Darcy and Hazel first connected with Greater Than Tech through our Defy Gravity Community Program and have continued growing their skills as part of our GTT Alumnae Club 💻

For their VR capstone project, Lights Out 💡, they addressed the limited access to affordable medical education and the lack of real-world experience that can lead to insecurity for trainees. Their solution combines education and VR to create a more accessible, hands-on learning experience, allowing users to practice realistic anesthesiology training while reducing barriers to entry.
