San Mateo County community members are invited to attend “When the Mission Follows You Home,” an in-person forum for veterans, first responders and their supporters.

The forum will create space for conversation, support, and connection around the mental health needs of veterans, first responders, and the people who stand beside them.

Cal OES is coordinating with the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office on an ongoing search and rescue mission in Desolation Wilderness for a missing 60 year-old male hiker, who began his hike on Monday from Fallen Leaf Lake near Lake Tahoe and has not been seen since then. Authorities are asking anyone who may have encountered the hiker to contact the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office at 530-621-6600 or 530-573-3051.

A legend hangs up her harness.

After nearly a decade of public service, San Mateo County Search and Rescue's most beloved K9, Tella, has officially retired.

Born in the Czech Republic, Tella arrived in the United States in 2015 and was quickly adopted by her current handler Jim, a San Mateo County local. "From the moment I met her, I knew she was something special," Jim recalled. "Her unshakable focus, coupled with a warm, outgoing personality, made her an invaluable partner on the trail." The two quickly became inseparable. Recognizing her tremendous potential, Jim led Tella through an intensive 18-month training program, earning her certification as a search dog through the CARDA - California Rescue Dog Association. This marked the beginning of a long, successful career that would take her far beyond San Mateo County. Tella would go on to support nearly 50 search and rescue operations across California, and countless public events. Her unwavering dedication helped strengthen community partnerships, bolster public support, and inspire the next generation of K9 volunteers, creating a lasting impact that will continue to pay dividends for many years to come. We count ourselves lucky to have shared the trail with such an incredible teammate and friend.
