The San Carlos Dog House Project team has been working hard collecting, organizing, building, and distributing dog houses to the San Carlos Apache community. The awesome Geronimo Animal Rescue Team hosted a build day last month at the clinic.

22 fantastic pre-fab dog houses purchased by the amazing Pinnacle Peak ACE Hardware & Paint family by raising the money from donations in a round-up at the register campaign. Thank you so much Lauren Arterburn for coordinating that effort!

We’ve had 2 big exciting build days.

The Tucson crew can up to Tempe and worked on β€œkits” for 42 dog houses!

Next steps are 1. Cutting out the front door 2. Adding the insulation 3. Adding the front screens 4. Painting and prepping the kits for transport

Let's talk dog houses. Do you know the basic characteristics of a good dog house?

Dog houses should:
-Provide enough room for the dog to fully stand up and move around
-Be lifted off the ground to provide ventilation during hot weather and to avoid the floor from getting too cold during winter
-Have good ventilation, sometimes the "front door" is enough
-Include insulation to help keep the temperatures comfortable during different seasons

We will be building dog houses using the Hofer house design. Check it out to learn more about how this design incorporates all the best characteristics of a great dog house!

Who doesn't love puppies? Cute, teeny-tiny, roly-poly, gentle, squishy, hungry. Can you think of any other words for puppies?!?

I have 1: NEEDY. Puppies are needy. And puppies HAVE needs.

1. A clean environment
2. Warmth
3. Nursing and nutrition
4. Health
5. Socialization

What a doghouse provides to a furry family:

πŸ•β€ A birthing mom needs an area protected from the elements, predators, pets and children.
🌬 β›ˆ β˜ƒοΈ Weather conditions like wind, rain, and cold can be dangerous for new puppies.

What can you do to help get outside puppies the help to meet their needs? LIKE and SHARE our page!

Are heavy winds a hazard for outdoor pets? The answer is YES!

🌬 Damage to fencing allows frightened pets to escape.
🌬 Blowing debris can cause injury to outside pets.
🌬 The force of a 40 mph gust of wind can carry a small pet for some distance.

How can you keep outside pets safe on windy days:

-Provide a dry, elevated dog house with clean dry bedding and a flap over the opening to keep drafts out.

-Make sure a cat has not crawled under your car seeking shelter and warmth near the engine. Tap on hood before starting the engine.

Remember that large animals need care too:

-Provide a wind break and/or shelter for horses and livestock to block wind and rain.

Let's talk ticks. The conditions on the Rez make it an ideal place for ticks. They're thriving.

Ticks pose a problem to pets, causing tick fever. But infected ticks are a risk for humans too. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever threatens the health and safety of the tribe.

Flea and tick preventatives and treatments are not widely available to Rez pets. With no local vet and "pop-up" vaccine clinics on hold from COVID, families must rely on donations from partner groups.

How can a pet house impact the tick problem? A doghouse creates a tick-safe zone.

1. Cedar is a natural repellant for ticks (and fleas). Cedarwood oil as a sealant is pet friendly and repels ticks.
2. The design lifts the pet off the ground.
3. The doghouse site is cleared of tall grasses, brush, and trash.
4. A pet protected from the elements inside a doghouse is not seeking relief in areas where ticks survive and thrive.
5. Environmental treatments can be focused near the pet house.

Fewer ticks=healthier pets=reduced likelihood of cases of RMSF in humans

Monkey's jail break is so close! She has been through so much: a vicious attack, the loss of her fur-brother, a mandatory 4-month quarantine, missing her home and her humans.

You have given her family hope.

Just a couple of short days ago, we were looking at the June 17th deadline thinking how fast it was approaching. With just about a third of the total left to raise, please continue to share her story.

And if you have not read Monkey's story, please check it out PINNED to the top of our page.
