This week, Teamsters 856 members from every division of our local union traveled to Washington, DC to participate in the Teamsters Women’s conference, which was once again led by our very own Local 856 President Ashley Alvarado who served as the conferences director for the fifth consecutive year. We want to thank our rank-and-file members for taking the time to take part in this week’s events, which included educational workshops, inspiring speakers, and sisterhood with over 1,500 Teamster women from across North America. Events like these further build our union by connecting members, helping us better understand the larger fight for economic justice for all workers.

🎓✊🏾 TEAMSTERS NATIONAL BLACK CAUCUS ANNUAL EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE ✊🏾🎓

This year, selected members of Teamsters Local 856 had the opportunity to attend the Teamsters National Black Caucus Annual Educational Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana!

The conference brought Teamsters together from across the United States and Canada to unite, learn, build solidarity, and uphold the principles of the Teamsters movement. Our Local 856 members participated in educational seminars, connected with fellow Teamsters, shared experiences, and proudly represented our Local.

A special thank you to Local 856 Representative Shaune Vaughn for leading our group in attendance and for being a strong advocate for encouraging greater African American participation and involvement within our union. Your leadership and commitment continue to help create opportunities for our members to engage, grow, and have their voices heard. ✊🏾

We’re proud to see Local 856 members taking part in these important conversations and bringing what they learn back to our membership and our union.

✊SOLIDARITY WORKS: Over 2,100 Contra Costa County Teamsters have ratified a new agreement today thanks to their unity. Last month, Contra Costa County Teamsters voted by 92% to authorize a strike — and their employer took notice, ultimately meeting the membership’s demands. Their new two-year contract contains wage increases, employer-paid health care, and a salary study of all Teamsters classifications to be completed in time for the next round of contract negotiations.

💪🪧 READY. TO. STRIKE. Once again, it’s STANDING ROOM ONLY in Martinez as Contra Costa County Teamsters attend strike school tonight. Contra Costa County Teamsters are learning about their strike rights as they prepare to walk off the job on August 19 if the County fails to negotiate a fair contract.

“What we’re asking for is reasonable, modest cost of living adjustments and equity in the pay system,” said Matt Finnegan, chief negotiator and Local 856 director of public services. “We are committed to ensuring that the best employees can continue to serve the Contra Costa County community, and that requires a fair and equitable wage system. A strike is not something we take lightly. If county officials refuse to negotiate a fair agreement, we will strike the entire county with all the power and energy of our Teamsters members.”

Repost from The Teamsters

123 years ago today, workers from across the country united in Niagara Falls to build an everlasting organization greater than themselves: The Teamsters Union.

The Teamsters are stronger today than we’ve been in decades.

✊ FUTURE LABOR LEADERS

🙌This summer, we’re proud to welcome our interns Sofía Calderon, a student at San José State University, and Isis Hernandez from the University of California, Santa Cruz, who are interning with our Central Coast Division Office.

💪From visiting worksites to supporting members in the field, they’re gaining firsthand experience with the day-to-day work that keeps our union strong.

🤝Opportunities like these help develop the next generation of labor leaders while giving students a closer look at the importance of worker representation, member engagement, and the power of solidarity.

🗣️We’re excited to have Sofía and Isis on the team this summer and can’t wait to see all they accomplish.
Learning from the field. Building the future.

More than 2,000 Contra Costa County Teamsters are poised to walk off the job after voting by over 90% to authorize a strike if a new agreement cannot be reached.  Contra Costa County Teamsters work in over 250 classifications, serving the public throughout the County in health services, general services and maintenance, and licensed vocational nursing and aides.

The overwhelming strike authorization vote, which had unprecedented participation, comes after months of negotiations wherein Teamster members have urged the County to adopt a fair compensation structure that prioritizes equity and values the people that provide critical services to the community. The Teamsters contract expired on June 30, 2026.

“Contra Costa County has consistently lagged behind neighboring jurisdictions when it comes to compensation,” said Matt Finnegan, Teamsters 856 Director of Public Services and Chief Negotiator. “We are simply asking the County to implement a long-term plan to address these inequities to ensure that the best qualified employees can afford to continue to serve the public in the County they love.”

Negotiations with the County are set to resume on July 28, 2026.

“We’re hopeful that the County administration has heard us loud and clear and we will reach an agreement that addresses our concerns and averts a strike that would impact services countywide,” said Finnegan.

✊STANDING ROOM ONLY: Contra Costa County Teamsters packed the house last night at their membership meeting ahead of a strike authorization vote. After months at the bargaining table, the County has failed to negotiate a fair agreement that properly addresses the more than 2000 Teamsters’ priorities.

The strike authorization vote began at the conclusion of last night’s meeting and will continue through next week. Teamsters 856 Contra Costa County members work in nearly every department throughout the county, serving the public in health services, general services and maintenance, and licensed vocational nursing and aides.
