🏅 The course covered investigations, disciplinary meetings, grievances, and presenting cases. These stewards put in the work through hands-on training, role play, and real-life application to strengthen their skills and representation.

Yesterday, our Teamsters from the SPIRIT program at Contra Costa County received an Educator Award for their outstanding work in our community. SPIRIT stands for Service Provider Individualized Intensive Training. It is a 9-unit college course taught at Contra Costa College that is designed for people in recovery with lived experience from a mental illness/and or a substance use disorder and family members who have navigated our mental health system for their loved ones. Thank you to all of Teamsters at Contra Costa County who help save lives in our community!

The Monterey Bay Central Labor Council honored three of our very own members with 2026 Unionist of the Year awards at their annual ceremony last week:

Through their leadership, advocacy, and commitment to their coworkers and the Union these members represent the very best of Teamsters Local 856.

This week, Local 856 shop stewards horticulturist Marc Villa and Animal Keeper Kate Tordsen testified before the Board of Supervisors Budget & Finance Committee in support of legislation to provide the San Francisco Zoo with an $8.5 million loan. Their voices helped move this critical measure forward unanimously out of committee — now it heads to the full Board for approval.

Representative Corey Hallman shared how thankful he is for stewards like Marc and Kate who continue to step up, speak out, and advocate for their coworkers and the Zoo community. Their leadership and solidarity make all the difference.
