Hello Coyotes and Community,

Our Spring semester is coming to a close very soon. Thank you all for your support and participation. We are reaching out today to invite you to our last First Peoples' Center event of the year.

May 5th is Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) Awareness Day. 4 out of 5 Native American women will experience violence and 1 in 3 will be r***d. We take this day to educate ourselves and bring awareness to this epidemic in a larger effort to create change.

Next week on May 5th at 6:00 PM during our final Films & Frybread event, we will be holding a special screening of the documentary Sisters Rising. The film captures the stories of 6 Native American women who are fighting for change and working hard to advocate for and lift up other Indigenous women.

Register now at https://tinyurl.com/FilmsFrybreadSistersRising

Please feel free to extend this invitation to your community. If you have any questions, or need support we are here for you.
If you decide to join, we will be wearing red!

This is something to keep in mind for all our members who will be coming back on campus in the Fall.

This is something to keep in mind for all our members who will be coming back on campus in the Fall.

The directive is the largest of its kind in U.S. higher education and would likely take effect this fall after the FDA formally approves the vaccines.

Statement on Atlanta Murders, violence against AAPI communities:

Dear School of Social Work students, faculty and staff,

The mass murder of eight people in Atlanta, including six people of Asian descent, along with the increase of violence against the Asian American and Pacific Island (AAPI) communities, leads me to reach out to you. Although racism against AAPI communities is not new, it is important for us to recognize these racist and violent acts happening nationwide, and act together to condemn them.

It is clear that anti-Asian sentiments, voiced for years, amplified by COVID-19, has led to increased aggression and violence towards AAPI communities. The recent mass murder additionally highlights the sexualization and dehumanizing ways in which AAPI women have been viewed, historically and currently.

I want to provide a few resources and other pieces where colleagues have spoken on this topic much more eloquently than I can.

First, I strongly recommend reading Dr. Kang’s piece in the Seattle Times. Dr. Kang is the Chair of Social Work at Seattle University. https://www.seattletimes.com/opinion/racist-colonialist-and-misogynist-narrative-abets-violence-against-asian-women/.

I also recommend the Statement by The Circle for Asian American Literary Studies. http://caals.org/archives/1117?fbclid=IwAR3-nKMP4RYg2rKuiGdn6CAKlhTG27FMAiJ2nHR4nZ-hpoh7_jpyp4aILVQ.

The NASW-CA Chapter Statement is here: https://naswcanews.org/nasw-ca-chapter-statement-on-murder-of-asian-americans-in-atlanta/.

The organization, Stop AAPI Hate, has been documenting hate crimes against Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, and has tips in a number of languages: https://stopaapihate.org/.

Next Wednesday, March 24th, the NASW-CA Chapter will be hosting an event entitled “NASW CA: Joining the Stop AAPI Hate Movement”, from 10-11AM. The event will feature Cynthia Choi, Co-Executive Director of Chinese for Affirmative Action. For more information, and to register, please see this webpage: https://naswcanews.org/nasw-ca-joining-the-stop-aapi-hate-movement-free-event-being-held-on-march-24th/.

As always, feel free to reach out to me for support and additional information, and I will try to provide it for you.

Sincerely,

Dr. McAllister
