This little piece of plastic saves lives!

Prior to the 1970’s the survival rates for Spina Bifida were roughly 12%. This was in large part to patients inability to empty their bladders which lead to renal(kidney) failure. In 1972, Dr. J. Lapides published his findings that CIC(clean intermittent catheterization) was effective in treating and preventing UTIs and Renal Failure. Today, 75% of children with SB live to adulthood and beyond.

Spina bifida, which literally means “cleft spine,”. It occurs when a portion of the spinal cord and spine do not close properly during the early development of a baby in utero. An estimated 166,000 individuals with spina bifida live in the United States.
