Lindsay Martinez, our research program coordinator, and Elisa Velador, our education curriculum manager, attended this year's 32nd Annual Rio Reforestation over the weekend with a few of our Land Stewardship Ambassador (LSA) alumni. They helped plant many native tree seedlings and brush in a former farm field near the Rio Grande. This event was a great way to get involved in conservation and restore native habitats that will eventually support wildlife and provide green space!

American Forests and other natural resource groups helped organize and host the effort. To learn more about the project and those involved, click on the link in the comments. Elisa and our LSA students have also volunteered at American Forests’ native plant nursery, so it was a full-circle moment to plant seedlings produced where they previously volunteered.

Here at East Foundation, we embrace a 'management by experiment' mindset. Over the years, a handful of changes have emerged, including opportunities to implement technology across our ranching department. We’re excited to connect roughly 800 students with the land over the next four days. Our education team will be hosting East Foundation’s annual Behind the Gates Field Days on our San Antonio Viejo ranch.

Students will rotate through stations to learn about cattle ranching, animal traits and adaptations, land stewardship and watersheds, and more! Stay tuned for updates regarding the week and more information on the partners and sponsors that help make this event impactful!

Fall is a busy season on our ranches, with many events taking place, including our research-based deer captures. Our team is looking forward to adding to our long-term dataset over the upcoming weekend on the El Sauz ranch.

This white-tailed deer research project is structured to collect data on relevant questions about one of the most iconic and culturally and economically important species in South Texas, while also looking beyond today for landowners, managers, and hunters well into the future. The New World screwworm (NWS) is a parasite that affects warm-blooded animals. Its fly larvae burrow into living tissue, causing severe and sometimes fatal damage. Protecting U.S. livestock and wildlife is a national security priority, and the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is the only proven method for eradicating NWS. National Hunting and Fishing Day (September 26, 2026) recognizes hunters, anglers, and landowners for their contributions to wildlife and conservation.

Game species management is a vital component of our work here at East Foundation. Game species are important ecologically, economically, and culturally, and hunting is an important tool for managing them effectively and sustainably. Decisions about harvest pressure and habitat management, along with variables outside of management control like weather and disease presence, interact to drive the dynamics of wildlife populations. We study these factors at a landscape scale to develop strategies that ensure these populations' long-term sustainability.

Our latest video, Ranch Technology, is officially out. Learn about the new technology our ranching team has implemented over the years, including virtual fences, to become a more efficient and productive ranching operation. The tool has resulted in meaningful benefits, including the ability to act more quickly if a positive screwworm case were to impact our South Texas ranches.
