SACXS July Meeting at the Garden Center
The July SACXS meeting was both interesting and informative. Members enjoyed a presentation on the history and conservation of the endangered black lace cactus (BLC) at San Miguel Electric Cooperative, Inc.'s San Miguel Mining Complex in McMullen and Atascosa Counties, Texas.
The presentation examined how the species was first discovered in 2014 during baseline studies for the San Miguel FGH Mine. At that time, black lace cactus was not known to occur in McMullen County. Since then, SMECI-funded studies have documented the endangered species at more than 120 sites across approximately 23 miles in McMullen and Atascosa Counties. Attendees learned about advances in understanding the cactus's distribution, suitable habitat, and improved survey methodologies, as well as ongoing and future conservation efforts designed to minimize impacts and increase awareness of this unique Texas species.
During the meeting, SACXS also presented the Larry Murphy Memorial Scholarship to Lila Davis, a graduate of Boerne High School. Lila received a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of her accomplishments and future educational goals.
In addition, Jimmy Black presented a check representing SACXS's share of the proceeds from the successful Mid States Conference that the Society hosted in June.
Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the July meeting a success. Enjoy these photos from the evening and presentation!
