Our Story

What is the DAV?

DAV is an organization of veterans helping veterans. We have over 1.3 million of your fellow veterans who have joined DAV to take advantage of the wide range of membership benefits. We receive no government funding and look out for our members 100% of the time because we have been in their shoes. We are proud of our 90+ year history of helping our country’s veterans, proud of our record of fighting for your rights and proud of working alongside so many other non-profits and advocacy organizations to make sure that we fulfill our promises to the men and women who have served. Most of all, we are proud to serve our country’s veterans as you so steadfastly served us.

What is DAV Alamo Chapter #5 and what do we do for our community?

Alamo chapter #5 is a San Antonio area chapter that meets the 3rd Saturday of the month. We promote the Disabled American Veterans, help veterans with claims paperwork, provide fellowship and knowledge to our chapter members and guests.

We are active with the Community Life Center (CLC) at Audie Murphy VA Hospital donating toiletries, cokes, Bingo socials and more. We work in conjunction with the Bone Marrow Unit at Audie Murphy VA hospital providing gift certificates from HEB (local grocery store) for families of the bone marrow donors. The chapter provides Bingo socials for the veterans at the Frank Tejeda Texas Veteran’s Home in Floresville, TX and the Community Living Center (CLC) at Audie Murphy VA Hospital. We, also, give a Christmas Party at the Frank Tejeda Texas Veteran’s Home in Floresville, TX. We assist Golden Corral with their Veteran’s day activities and collect donations at a Sam’s Club doing the Forget-Me-Not fund raising campaign.

Our Chapter Service Officers (CSO) help veterans answering claims questions and assistance. We have partnered with Wayland Baptist University and provided a Veterans Claims Assistance Office once a month. Our primary function is to advise, instruct, and counsel claimants and to provide assistance in the preparation of claims for various benefits to which claimants may be entitled. This may be assisting with the paperwork for filing initial disability claims, claims for increases in disability, reconsiderations, spouse’s death benefits and more.

What does DAV do for you?

1. Helps returning veterans transition back to civilian life by linking them with services that address their physical, emotional, and financial needs.

2. Provides free, professional assistance to veterans of all generations in obtaining VA and other government benefits earned through service.

3. Fights for veterans’ rights on Capitol Hill.

4. Links veterans to job training and job assistance programs.

5. Funds rehabilitation programs for veterans with severe disabilities, such as blindness or amputation
