What happens when you bring San Antonio residents together and invite them to dream about the possibilities of turning closed schools into community hubs of resilience?

You get this. 👆

Since 2014, 45 schools have closed in our city - and more school closures are on the way - but we refuse to let the buildings we grew up in become forgotten spaces.

Swipe through to see what our community dreamed together:

💼 Small business incubators
🤝 Intergenerational gathering spaces
🥕 Urban farms & community kitchens
🏠 Senior housing & mixed-use development
⏳ Temporary activations – playgrounds, gardens, markets

And most importantly – how YOU can get involved.

✅ Join the coalition
✅ Evaluate a closed school near you
✅ Write to your school board
✅ Host a screening in your neighborhood

‼️ The City of San Antonio wants to know what matters to residents. But “food access” isn’t listed as a budget priority.

✍️ That means we have to write it in.

🥬 Food apartheid affects thousands of San Antonio families. Kids go to school hungry. Seniors choose between medicine and groceries. Working parents are priced out of healthy options.

💰 The budget survey is open now. Fill it out and in the open response sections, write: “Invest in food access.”

🏷️ Tag a neighbor who should do the same.

🎬 CLOSED SCHOOLS. OPEN POSSIBILITIES.
Please join us for a free community screening of Beyond Closure – a powerful documentary about what happens when communities refuse to let closed schools become forgotten spaces.
In San Antonio, 45 school campuses have closed since 2014, and more are on the horizon. These buildings were once the heart of neighborhoods – places of learning, gathering, gardens, and hope for our children’s futures. When they close, something vital is lost.
But it doesn’t have to be the end of the story.
📅 Saturday, April 18
📍 Galeria E.V.A. 3412 S Flores St.

A San Antonio City Council member is proposing rotating council meetings to different parts of the city instead of just downtown.

Most, if not all, city council meetings are held downtown at City Hall at 100 Military Plaza or city council chambers in the Municipal Plaza Building across the street at 114 W. Commerce Street. A council consideration request filed by District 5 Councilwoman Teri Castillo is recommending putting more of the city into the city council meeting.

While the council has multiple meetings each week in the form of smaller committee meetings, the larger full council meetings of all ten members and the mayor are referred to as A-Session or B-Session.

🎬 Beyond Closure Community Screening – Final Planning
We’re just weeks away from our April 18th community screening. Come ready to finalize logistics, outreach, and volunteer roles to ensure this event uplifts community voice and builds momentum for school reclamation.

🍎 SNAP Benefits Updates
Significant changes to federal food assistance are impacting thousands of San Antonio families. We’ll discuss what’s happening, how it affects our communities, and how our coalition can respond.

💰 Proposed Sugary Beverage Fund
We’re exploring a new policy idea: a sugary beverage tax that could generate millions annually for food access programs—including incentives for fresh fruits and vegetables, community food infrastructure, and nutrition education. Join us for an initial conversation about how this could work in San Antonio and what questions we need to answer.

🗣️ Advocacy Training
Learn how to show up powerfully at City Council meetings, budget hearings, and other decision-making spaces. We’ll cover:
- How to structure effective public testimony
- Navigating the “Citizen’s To Be Heard” process
- Turning your lived experience into compelling advocacy

Whether you’re a longtime coalition member or just getting connected, your voice is needed. Let’s build together.
