Honoring Black History 100 Years Strong ✊🏿

At Eastside Family Coalition, Black history is not something we visit once a year....it is something we live, protect, and pass on through families, youth, elders, and community.
In 2026, we mark 100 years since Dr. Carter G. Woodson established Negro History Week, planting a seed of truth, pride, and resistance that continues to grow through generations. What began as an act of courage became a movement to ensure Black stories, knowledge, and contributions were never erased.

This Black History Month matters deeply. We are witnessing attempts to erase truth....the removal of public markers of slavery, the banning of books by Black authors, and the silencing or distortion of Black history in schools. These actions are not accidental they are harmful.

Eastside Family Coalition exists to resist that erasure by grounding our work in people with lived experience, intergenerational leadership, and community-rooted solutions. We teach our children the truth. We equip families with tools to heal and thrive. We reclaim our power together.

At Eastside Family Coalition, we stand firm and affirm:
✊🏿 Black history IS American history
✊🏾 Our ancestors’ wisdom lives through our families and youth
✊🏽 Our stories will not be erased, rewritten or watered down they will be carried forward

We teach it. We protect it. We live it.
And we pass it forward to the next generation.

Meet Chef JJ

Chef JJ, age 16, is a junior at Wagner High School and a private chef who creates with soul.

He began his culinary journey at just 6 years old and has since taken cooking classes around the world, including in Greece and Curaçao. Through these experiences, he’s discovered how food connects people, tells stories, and preserves culture.

A talented young chef, JJ has already made his mark in the culinary world, winning two cooking competitions: one as a Junior Chef and another in a “Best vs. Best” adult competition. His creativity and skill shine through in every dish he creates.

JJ’s ultimate goal is to become a food, travel, and history documentarian, exploring the world to uncover the stories behind the meals that bring people together.

He continues to build his craft, travel, and inspire other young people to follow their passions and pursue their dreams with purpose.
