Come along on a "field trip" with School Discovery Network! Our team recently visited Compass Rose Public Schools at the location shared by Compass Rose Ingenuity and Compass Rose High School.

Inga Cotton interviewed Lars Nelson, Compass Rose Executive Director, and learned what makes Compass Rose a great school model and one that sets students up for success after graduation. We really enjoyed this tour and also got to meet Marketing and Communications Coordinator Anna Ruiz and the principals and assistant principals of the Ingenuity and High School campuses.

Compass Rose is a network of public charter schools where academic achievement coupled with personal growth is their True North - everything they do is oriented in that direction. Compass believes all children deserve access to a world-class education so they can chase their dreams and explore their passions. They offer free public transportation for their students.

They have five locations in the San Antonio area. Three campuses serve grades Pre-K4 through 8th: Compass Rose Dream focuses on the fields of medicine and healthcare careers, Compass Rose Legacy highlights entrepreneurship through a STEM lens, and Compass Rose Journey students use STEM-based learning to understand their roles in contributing to a healthy self, community, and world. Compass Rose Ingenuity and Compass Rose High School are co-located at one campus, serve Pre-K4 through 12th grades, and place a focus on aviation, aeronautics, computer science, and engineering. Compass Rose Impact provides opportunities for 9th-12th grade students who may need credit recovery to graduate.

Compass Rose will be at the SA Zoo for School Discovery Day on Saturday, October 17 from 10 AM to 1 PM. This is an event where families have a chance to talk with dozens of schools and enjoy a fun-filled day at the SA Zoo.

Why is it important for families of children with special needs who might apply for TEFAs in the spring to request a special education evaluation this month? For their series "Ask an Education Reporter," Noah Bach from the San Antonio Express-News turned to Inga Cotton, Founder and Executive Director of School Discovery Network, for guidance:

"Families can ask for an evaluation and tailored learning plan at any point in the calendar year. But Cotton said October is the latest families who want to apply to a different school next year or use vouchers should wait because district evaluation deadlines could lengthen the process beyond when voucher applications open."

"'We want to set them up for success,' she said. 'So if they go to their neighborhood public school and ask for the evaluation, they're not locked in to either staying with that neighborhood public school, doing a charter school or a private school.'"

Hop on the School Discovery Train! The first stop in our 2026-2027 Series is the San Antonio Zoo on October 17. Primer is a valued SDN school partner and will be at this event.

Primer is a private, in-person school that serves K-8th grades in a mixed-age learning environment. Mixed age classrooms allow students to learn at their level, support one another, and build real community. Primer has 3 campuses in San Antonio: Live Oak, University Heights, and Potranco Road. They are accepting Texas Education Freedom Account Funds (TEFA), but families receive free tuition if they do not qualify for TEFA.

Join Primer and all of our School partners on Saturday, October 17 from 10 AM to 1 PM at School Discovery Day. Families can visit with dozens of schools and stay for a fun-filled day at the SA Zoo.

On Saturday, October 3, School Discovery Network took part in the Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Festival in Brackenridge Park, a family-friendly day of hands-on and experiential nature learning. SDN Team members Mayra Schneider and Denise Valuk spent the day talking to parents and educators, sharing the SDN story and resources, and inviting them to our next School Discovery Day on October 17 at the San Antonio Zoo.

Kids enjoyed visiting with the team as well, participating in a fun craft that showed how bees transfer pollen from flower to flower. School Discovery Network provides families with the tools and resources needed to help them make the best possible education choice for their children.

Legacy Traditional Schools is a network of free, open-enrollment public charter schools that believes there is no limit to what a child can achieve with great education. Legacy offers a well-rounded education that emphasizes all areas of academic study; including the arts, physical education, extensive athletics, and extracurricular activities. Legacy Traditional Schools have two campuses in our area: Legacy Traditional-Cibolo and Legacy Traditional-Alamo Ranch, both serve students in Pre-K3&4 through 8th grades. Many families of students with disabilities applied and were approved for Tier 1 priority status during the first year of the Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) applications. What they found out is there is not enough capacity or resources at many private schools to serve their children's needs.

The San Antonio Report spoke with families about their school search experiences, as well as private schools that serve children with learning differences and public schools that provide the required evaluations. You can read the full article here:

The SDN audience includes many families with special needs children. Our goal is to be a trusted source of information for all families, and parents of children with disabilities should know TEFA's are an option. We also work with private schools and want them to know this gap exists within our community. We encourage private schools to consider this an opportunity to serve more special needs students; as well as engaging with the media and sharing how your unique learning model adds valuable perspective to the conversation.

Our Founder and Executive Director, Inga Cotton, is a parent of a child with special needs, and she believes we have a greater responsibility to advocate for our children. For our part, School Discovery Network will continue spreading awareness to remind parents they can exercise school choice; engaging with the news media can be an important part of the process.
