Last week was Teacher Appreciation Week, and we teamed up with Verdant EDU to host a Teacher Appreciation Happy Hour at Vibras. We enjoyed great conversations, plus tacos and drinks to show educators how much they mean to us. Our event sponsor SAS Shoemakers shared that teachers can bring their work IDs to any SAS - San Antonio Shoemakers store on any day for a 10% discount.

Last week, Inga Cotton, our Founder and Executive Director, participated in a televised town hall on News 4 and FOX San Antonio about hot topics in education, including school closures, staff cuts, education savings accounts (also known as vouchers), and school safety. The panel members included Wally McCampbell, Chief of Police at North East ISD; Ed Garza, trustee at San Antonio ISD; and Jamilah Nailor Thompson, the parent of students at Judson Middle School, which is closing this summer. “I've seen this massive transformation in the charter school sector in San Antonio,” Cotton said. “So maybe we're on the verge of a massive transformation in private schools, microschools, and homeschooling.”

Ehizogie Ero-Brown, a certified educator who already works as a private tutor, said she recently applied to become a TEFA-approved vendor so her business, “Learn and Play,” can be listed on the state’s vendor database.

Ero-Brown said the application was simple. So far, her only cost has been $37 for the required fingerprinting. Now, she’s waiting to hear whether she qualifies.

“Yes, go ahead, register, and then when you’re ready, you’re already on the database,” Ero-Brown said. “You can market yourself and say I’m TEFA’s trusted. I’m on the vendor list for TEFA.”

Last week we had a great turnout of potential teacher entrepreneurs at our Teacher Town Hall at Vibras on North St. Mary's Street. They came to learn about opportunities for teachers, professors, tutors, therapists, and more to become providers who offer services to families that are awarded Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFAs), also known as ESAs or vouchers. Our featured speaker, Sharon Gutierrez, is a business strategist and marketing expert who is known for championing 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘶𝘳𝘴. She offered tips for educators who are starting their own businesses and getting creative about reaching clients.
