Cubmaster Minute: With the holidays upon us, I thought I would try to answer an age-old question regarding Santa Claus.

Was Santa Claus a Scout?

One just needs to examine how he stacks up against the scout law;

Trustworthy - You certainly can trust that Santa will show up every year.

Loyal -
He's very dedicated to his craft and his mission. Imagine the disappointment if he wasn't loyal to his work.

Helpful - saves many a dad from last minute shopping. Dads are notorious for leaving things to the last minute, just ask a mom.

Friendly - how many adults would let a zillion kids sit on their lap and listen to what they want? And smile while doing it?

Courteous - always says thanks for the 62 billion calories he gets in milk and cookies each year.

Kind - delivering gifts to children is a great act of kindness. Except for the drum sets. That's not too kind, at least to the parents.

Obedient - I emailed Mrs. Claus on this one. No reply, but seeing he's been married for all those years, I'm going to bet he does what she tells him.

Cheerful - Ho ho ho. Need I say more?

Thrifty - makes his own toys. Saves a bundle on shipping alone.

Brave - would you get in a magic sleigh pulled by reindeer and fly? Me neither.

Clean - not sure how he does it, but that red suit looks great even after the millionth chimney has been gone down

Reverent - does his thing on a very special night for one religion; represents the spirit of the day

So yes, Santa Clause is really a scout.

This time of year no matter what holiday you celebrate, remember that doing your best and living the Scout Oath and Law are what make each of you really a Scout.

As Scouts, we know how fortunate we are to have a warm meal every night — whether around the campfire or at the kitchen table. And we know that not everyone is so lucky.

That’s the genesis of Scouting for Food, the annual food-collection drive run by your local council. It’s another reminder to our local communities that Scouts are here, doing good turns.

if you see a bag outside your door please filler up and a scout will pick it up the following weekend.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and, according to new BSA data, Generation Z believes bullying is the biggest issue facing their generation and the number one issue they want to solve.
As a Scout parent and/or leader, you know that, given the Scout Law, the BSA’s anti-bullying education, and Scouts’ daily Good Turns, Scouts are among the most prepared to take on bullying prevention. While Scouts pledge to lend a helping hand at all times, their peers may not always know who those Scouts are or that Scouts are important allies in the effort against bullying.
That’s why we are asking all Scouts to wear their Scouting uniform to school on October 16th to make it easy for their classmates to find people they can count on for a kind word; a lunch buddy; or a resource to help them recognize, safely respond to, and report all types of bullying. The goal is that once other students know who the Scouts are, they will feel comfortable reaching out to those individuals whenever they need a friend.
This effort will also serve as a visual reminder within each community that Scouting – with guiding principles like being kind, helpful, and friendly – is an invaluable resource for youth, schools, and society as a whole.
How to Participate:
Ask all Scouts in your family, pack, troop, ship or crew to proudly wear their uniform to school on October 16th and remind them to show the power of kindness by reaching out to classmates to make sure everyone feels welcome.
Encourage people to participate by sharing this image on social media ahead of Oct. 16.
In October, share inspirational stories that showcase how Scouts or the Scouting program has helped combat bullying. Use the hashtag .
Check out the BSA’s bullying awareness information, and share the uplifting stories from our official social media pages on October 16.
Help curtail cyberbullying by encouraging Scouts who have parental permission to use social media to send supportive and uplifting comments and messages to classmates on October 16th… and every other day.

On this day in 1912, Arthur Rose Eldred is notified that he will be the Boy Scouts of America’s first Eagle Scout.

The Boy Scouts might never have existed in America, but for the fact that a Chicago publisher got lost in a London fog in 1909.

William D. Boyce was looking for a particular address in London when he got caught in a dense fog. He stopped a young man, asking for directions. That boy did more than just give directions. He personally led Boyce to his destination. When Boyce tried to offer him a tip, the boy refused. He was a Scout, he noted, and he believed in doing Good Turns for others.

Boyce had to learn more.

He obtained an introduction to the founder of scouting in Britain. Robert Baden-Powell was a former military man and the author of a manual intended for military use. One day, he discovered that boys in England were interested in his manual.

Let’s just say that these English boys weren’t using his military tricks in the most productive ways. ;)

Baden-Powell decided to capitalize on the boys’ interest, but to redirect their efforts toward more useful ventures. He wrote a second manual, Scouting for Boys, and he tested his ideas with a group of 22 boys at a two-week camp.

The Boy Scouts were born! Well, at least they were in England. The idea would come to America about a year later when the so-called “Unknown Scout” offered his assistance to Boyce on that foggy London day.

Boyce returned home, with the tenets of scouting ringing in his ears. He joined with other like-minded Americans to form a new scouting organization in America, too. The Boy Scouts of America received its congressional charter on February 8, 1910.

No one ever discovered the identity of the Unknown Scout, but a monument was later erected in his honor in London. The statue bears an inscription:

To the Unknown Scout whose
Faithfulness in the
Performance of the Daily
Good Turn brought the
Scout Movement to the
United States of America.
