We screened Sir this week. He’s a 13 month old neutered shepherd mix that is confident and friendly. Sir did not have enough toy drive for detection work but was very food motivated. He is tolerant of strangers messing with his ears, feet, tail, and teeth. Sir didn’t flinch when we set off a surprise airhorn. We think Sir would make a great service dog candidate or possible food reward based detection candidate.

Almost Home Canine Rescue

Auzzie is a 1.5yr old border collie/heeler mix available for adoption through Almost Home Canine Rescue. One of our team traveled to SD to evaluate him in person. Auzzie is a high drive, confident dog that would excel in some detection roles or possibly sport work. He has a nice hunt for his toy and toy engagement in new locations. We took him to a park, the airport, and Home Depot. Auzzie does have some typical herding breed behaviors with his pushiness and can be mouthy when over stimulated. He does have a history of herding children and can get on barrier reactive to other dogs but reengages with a toy nicely. Auzzie would make a nice conservation candidate or another detection role that does not have him in crowds.

K9s For Warriors Career Change Dog

Otter is a 1.5yr old lab mix that was originally pulled by K9s for Warriors as a service dog candidate but it was determined that’s not quite the right fit for him. Otter is social with new people and confident in new places. He’s also neutral around other dogs even happy to do figure 8 walks with strange dogs. Otter loves fetch and hunts well for his toy. He does have some minor noise sensitivity to surprise loud noises but recovers when he has some distance. We think Otter would excel in the right detection role.

Shelter to Search K9’s Olive and Rocky attended the Canine Search Specialist Course with their handlers this weekend. They both participated in a lot of new training activities including lifting into a building. Both teams did great and learned a lot.

Fin was originally found as a stray in south Texas. The amazing team at K9s For Warriors originally pulled him hoping he would be a service dog candidate. Once they realized he needed a different job they reached out to our team to find him a new career.
