San Antonio Chapter #4 at San Antonio City Cemetery #1 honoring our fallen vets from the Battle of The Alamo to Vietnam. 44 veterans are recognized today.

05/22/2023

On Saturday, 27 May 2023, at 9:00 am, members of San Antonio Chapter #4, National Society Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR), San Antonio, Texas, will gather at San Antonio’s historic City Cemetery #1 to conduct flag placement ceremonies in honor of America’s annual national 2023 Memorial Day observances. Members of the NSSAR have all been confirmed as direct descendants of men who fought in or otherwise actively supported our ancestors during the American Revolutionary War. This hereditary society’s main purpose is to honor the memory of those brave Americans who fought to establish our country and to bring awareness of those sacrifices to all living Americans.

More than fifty military veterans have been identified as being interred at City Cemetery #1. There are men who fought in the Texas Revolution, the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the War in Vietnam interred in this, San Antonio’s first public cemetery was established in 1853. The majority of these heroes have never been accorded honors on any American national holidays. Therefore, members of San Antonio Chapter #4, have elected to conduct flag placement ceremonies at each of the identified grave sites in grateful appreciation of their services to America and to Texas.

The observances will include an opening ceremony, invocation, and remarks by the chapter president. A member of the chapter will recite the names of the nineteen American military service members who died overseas in non-hostile conditions during 2022 in order to remind us that Americans are still prepared to sacrifice themselves in defense of liberty. Four honor guard teams will then disperse throughout the cemetery to place flags at each grave and to assess the conditions of these grave sites for any that might need maintenance. A closing ceremony will include a benediction and the playing of Taps by a former member of the U.S. Army Band. In the future, San Antonio Chapter #4 intends to offer this annual Memorial Day service to all veterans buried in our several historic cemeteries but will initiate this program at City Cemetery #1 in 2023. The public is invited to attend.
