THE LOOPHOLE PEOPLE USE TO GET OUT OF DOING THE RIGHT THING

"Honor your father and your mother" (Exodus 20:12) is one of the Ten Commandments, and in Jesus' day it was among the highest values.

Honoring parents especially meant caring for their physical needs in old age.

The religious leaders' tradition let a person say, "Whatever you would have gained from me is given to God" (Mark 7:11). Once their resources were declared an offering to God, they no longer had to support their aging parents.

Picture someone whose aging parents have needs. They write all their savings and their 401(k) into their will for the church, just so they don't have to care for Mom and Dad. They keep using their money, the religious leaders benefit, and the parents lose out.

Jesus called it "making void the word of God by your tradition" (Mark 7:13).

They had used a religious-sounding rule to cancel a real obligation, and He was condemning it.

No good-sounding excuse cancels what we owe the people who depend on us.

Jesus condemned this workaround, so let's turn away from all of our pretending.

YOU CAN KNOW ALL THE STORIES AND STILL MISS JESUS

Jesus's own disciples saw His power up close and still failed to understand its significance.

So many of us have heard all about what He's done and still miss it too.

You can be amazed by Jesus and still not understand Him or recognize Him.

You can be amazed by Jesus and still not know Him.

You can be amazed by Jesus and still not trust Him with your life.

The disciples had already seen miracle after miracle.

What they needed more than anything was to recognize what the works of Jesus reveal about the person of Jesus.

When you see Him for who He is, you can move from being amazed by Him to trusting Him with your life.
