Denver Heights CC Educational Series

The Bellinger house/mansion (built in the 1920's) of Charles Bellinger is on a huge lot located in the Denver Heights neighborhood that occupies most of the block on S. New Braunfels between ML King Dr. (formerly Nebrska) and Nevada St., across the street from the St. Gerald school building. In the 1940's the Greater Corinth Baptist Church bought the property from Charles Bellinger's son Valmo and heirs, to date the house/mansion still sits on that same property along with the Greater Corinth Baptist Church.

Charles Bellinger (1835-1937), political leader, entrepreneur and gambler, considered a colorful character by some, he was thought to be the richest Black man in Texas. One of the most influential black community leaders in San Antonio, Bellinger forced City Hall to bring much needed services to the east-side including paved streets, street lights, plumbing, a meeting hall and San Antonio’s first black library (now the Carver Community Cultural Center) among many. He was successful in uniting east-side voters to vote as one.

He and his son (Valmo Charles Bellinger 1899-1994) founded the San Antonio Register around 1931, Valmo was the publisher, for those that might not know, the paper chronicled the life of the Black community on the east-side, some credit Valmo as the founder. Valmo was an assistant to his father, ultimately his successor and inherited his father’s political machine and influence after his father's death and like his father he was a powerful influence in city politics, he continued to contribute to the betterment of the east-side and the entire city until his death.
