Following multiple state takeovers of local school districts by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), Texas Civil Rights Project is raising alarm over this troubling pattern in state education oversight:

"When the Texas Education Association (TEA) takes over a local school district and removes the school board's elected officials, they install appointed school board members. These members are neither elected by, nor accountable to, the local communities whose children go to these schools. Currently the TEA has taken over six ISDs. Five of those districts are majority Hispanic or Black, and all six are significantly more economically disadvantaged than the average school district in Texas. TCRP is very concerned about any instance where any community is stripped of its right to elect their local leaders," said Carl Blair, Senior Election Protection Attorney for the Texas Civil Rights Project.

🚨 Third Future Schools Update!

On Tuesday, February 17, the San Antonio ISD board voted to authorize Superintendent Jaime Aquino to move forward with negotiations of a potential 1882 partnership with Third Future Schools at 3 San Antonio ISD campuses. The motion that was passed also had a stipulation that included that Third Future engage at least 75% of parents. Originally, meetings were scheduled with Hirsch, Herff, and Rhodes.

What we know now is that the SAISD school board is proposing to close Rhodes Middle School, relocate those students to Tafolla, and allow Third Future Schools to run Tafolla Middle School, Ogden Elementary, and Hirsch Elementary.

Take the action steps in this post and sign up to speak at the upcoming SAISD board meeting via the link 🔗 in our link tree.

It's alleged that the charter school company that will be taking over Tafolla will not be teaching electives, so our students won’t be able to take band, football, choir, etc. Since Tafolla will now be the remaining feeder school to Lanier, that’s going to impact Lanier’s football, band, mariachi and other such programs. We need our Lanier alumni and community to know about this and to go before the SAISD board on Monday, March 23rd at 5:30pm at 514 W Quincy to oppose this proposal.

This past Friday, we hosted our Pet Care Connect program in District 5 — almost exactly one year since this initiative first began — right in the heart of the Historic Westside, and the impact was powerful.

Our ACS staff, dedicated volunteers, and District 5 Councilwoman Teri Castillo and her team canvassed the neighborhood, shared essential pet care information, and connected directly with families who needed support.

Here’s what that day of action looked like:

🐾 46 pets microchipped and registered
🐾 145 spay/neuter referrals provided
🐾 277 pet care resources shared
🐾 2,864 pounds of pet food distributed
🐾 4 dogs removed from chains
🐾 1,000 homes visited with information and outreach

Every conversation, every microchip placed, and every resource shared helps address roaming concerns at the root — equipping pet owners with education, access to services, and awareness of Chapter 5 laws so pets can remain safely and responsibly cared for at home.

Pet Care Connect is about meeting the community where they are and advancing our strategic plan to build safer, healthier neighborhoods for both people and pets.

A huge thank you to the District 5 Council Office, Spay Neuter Network, DaisyCares, City of San Antonio Solid Waste Management and our incredible ACS staff and volunteers for going above and beyond to make this event a success.
