Most people have never heard her name. But without her, Texas might not exist. 🀠
In the winter of 1821, Jane Long refused to leave.
Her husband, General James Long, had been captured and killed in Mexico. Every other settler had abandoned the tiny fort on Bolivar Peninsula. She was left alone with her young daughter and a teenage servant girl, facing a brutal Gulf Coast winter with almost no food and no help coming.
She fired the fort's cannon to bluff approaching Karankawa warriors into thinking soldiers were still inside. She survived on fish, oysters, and sheer will. And on December 21, 1821, she gave birth to a daughter, Mary James Long: believed to be the first child of Anglo-American parents born in Texas.
Jane Long didn't just survive. She stayed, rebuilt, and became one of the most celebrated figures of early Texas. She ran a boarding house in Brazoria that became a gathering place for the men who would shape the Republic. Sam Houston was a regular guest.
History gave her the title "The Mother of Texas." She earned every word of it. πŸ’ͺ
