Harlandale ISD Donation from Scheh Family
Margaret England Canfield and Cheryl England Conway are the great granddaughters of C.A. (Christian Adolph) Scheh, born in 1876, a founder of the Harlandale ISD in the early 1900's. Their Scheh family has been honored to have the Scheh Elementary School in Harlandale and now recently replaced by the Scheh Center named after him for his service and philanthropy to the school district. His granddaughter and their mother, Muriel Scheh England, volunteered at Scheh Elementary School by tutoring students in English, donating their stage curtain and sound system, and furnishing their teacher's lounge.
Muriel attended Harlandale's Morrill Elementary and later Harlandale Middle School, where she played the flute, until she was drafted to be in the Brackenridge High School marching band at 14 years old, as they needed flute players in the 1940's. She traveled with the band to St. Louis and Chicago for band competitions and played locally annually in the Battle of Flowers Parade.
Later in the 1980's, she bought another flute and played it in several bands, including the San Antonio Community Band and the Beethoven Concert Band for 30 years. With the Harlandale Performing Arts Director's help, upon Muriel's recent passing and according to her wishes, Margaret and Cheryl gifted her solid silver flute and all the accessories to a deserving student. They identified a flautist, who played on a borrowed flute for 2 years for concerts and band events, and is Harlandale's McCollum High School Drum Major and wants to play and study music in college, to receive the flute, as he was unable to afford his own flute.
