I noticed a Gulf Fritillary butterfly emerging from its chrysalis today on one of the windows of my office building. Everyone in the office came to watch at it slowly stretched its wings. Then someone said, "Here's another!" and "Another one!" and "Another!" For some reason, the caterpillars liked our south-facing windows as a place of transformation. These butterflies are bright orange on top and look beautiful against the passionflowers that are one of their main host plants, both for the leaves when they are caterpillars and the nectar when they are butterflies. One of the reasons I was so perturbed when the City of San Antonio asked us to mow our yard was that we have wild passionflowers growing here and there, and I wanted to have plenty of habitat for these lovely butterflies.

Did you know....Alta Vista Food Forest is a Certified Wildlife Habitat? We protect and ensure that our native wildlife has food, water, cover, and places to raise young. We only use sustainable practices which keep the soil, air and water clean.

A momma skunk has joined us at the Food Forest and has given birth to at least three kits. They run around and dig ALL OVER looking for grubs and bugs, and small mammals. As the weather cools down, they will start eating more plants such as corn, peas, and berries! Skunks are beneficial because they eat harmful organisms like snakes, scorpions, cockroaches, house mice and even black widow spiders!

Be careful when you are visiting at night as you might encounter a little skunk! πŸ•·οΈπŸ›πŸŒ½β€οΈ
