Under The Bridge Inc. Helping The Homeless of San Antonio with a Simple Sunday Lunch

06/07/2026

Michael Jenson and friends did it again. Michael brings one of the favorite meals to Under the Bridge. His report follows:

"We did a very good plate count! We served 174 plates of meatloaf, green beans, corn, salad, tea and water." Michael further stated that every plate was completely cleaned, all the served food was eaten and the volunteers did a great job.

Next week Pastor Everett Bell and friends and congregants will prepare and serve the Sunday meal.

A busy, busy day today Under the Bridge. The Rotary Club of San Antonio Pearl started early cooking hotdogs on location and worked late as approximately 160 people lined up for the freshly cooked hotdogs with potato chips, condiments of their choice and lemonade, and bottled water to go.

Next Sunday Michael Jenson and friends will serve his famous meatloaf to our friends Under the Bridge.

I was unable to attend the activities Under the Bridge today but Mike Holland sent in the following report:

It was a warm and busy day downtown. We did move around the corner and served in the shade and it wasn’t bad at all. We fed a lot of folks - estimate 175 at least. We served Kiolbassa sausage wraps, fruit, hardboiled eggs, chips, cookies and crackers with tea, lemonade and lots of bottled water. We also had some clothes which went fast. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I did give Mike a call, he is one of only two people left still volunteering Under the Bridge that have been doing so for a longer time than I have. The other of course is Ellen Ott, our founder. Mike said the crowd today was one of the largest he can remember in all these years.

Next week the Rotary Club at the Pearl will prepare and serve the Sunday lunch.

We had another busy day Under the Bridge today. Pastor Everett Bell and his friends and parishioners brought three hundred hotdogs along with chips and cookies for our guests and needed every bit of it. We also served our usual cold lemonade and bottled water for everyone. Pastor Bell also brought clothes and shoes that were passed out as long as they lasted. When I arrived at about 11:00, the line of hungry folks was already a block long and stayed that way for quite a while.

Next Sunday Mike Holland and family and friends will prepare and serve the Sunday meal.

Apparently the beautiful weather that we had yesterday was too big an attraction for our usual guests as we had a smller than usual crowd. Ellen Ott and friends reported that they served just ninety-six to go boxes with a ham and cheese sandwich, 2 pickles, 2 cookies and chips plus nineteen more sandwiches and also passed out other bags with just cookies and/or chips until those items were gone.

Next week Pastor Everett Bell and his friends and parisioners will serve the Sunday meal.

Yesterday in my absence, Jason Perez and friends brought seventeen large pepperoni pizzas and three large cheese pizzas. They estimate that they served 130 guests. He reports further that he’ll be back to cooking onsite in when it is his turn again in July.

Next week Ellen Ott and friends will be on hand to serve the Sunday lunch.

Wow! Mike Specia and his crew of volunteers and friends had a busy, busy day Under the Bridge. Before it was all said and done they served 190 meals to our guests. Mike's crew prepared sausages and buns, rice and beans, some homemade cookies and bottled water to a very long line of people. Mike has always done a great job in service to these folks.

Next week Jason Perez and friends will prepare and serve the Sunday meal.

It had all the makings of a cold, dismal day today but Zach Henderson and Rodney Bremby still managed to provide lunch for over 125 guests. I didn't make it down today but the report is that "125 hungry folks finished off 160 homemade cheeseburgers served with assorted chips, lemonade and bottled water".

"Rodney, Zach and friends were joined by Pastor Bell and members of his congregation with the bottled water and a table full of clothing to hand out".

Apparently all goes well whether I am there or not.

Next week Mike Specia and friends will prepare and serve the Sunday meal.

We expected to get rained out today or to at least get very wet, but the rain never came and Ellen Ott and friends had a long line waiting for them when they arrived. Ellen and her crew served spaghetti and meat sauce with sides of green beans and a garden salad. We also had plenty of lemonade and cold water to wash down the meal. Altogether there were approximately 170 plates served including seconds. We got several very positive comments on the food today from our guests.

Next week Rodney Bremby and Zach Henderson and their friends will prepare and serve the Sunday meal.

Today was a cool and rainy day Under the Bridge but it gave us a chance to try out the new canopies that were donated a few months ago. These canopies allowed Michael Jensen and friends to keep their meals dry while they serve them. Michael prepared his famous meatloaf for this Sunday along with green beans, corn, salad, water and tea and served 132 plates to our guests.

Next week Ellen Ott and friends will prepare and serve the Sunday meal.
