We’re excited to introduce our Official M.C Jeanette Reynolds, the Partner Engagement Specialist at SA 2020 - a nonprofit organization that drives progress toward a shared vision for a thriving San Antonio. Earth Day

Earth Day reminds us that this planet is our home, and it is also the source of the resources we need to live. This significant day focuses our attention on how we all can be more environmentally friendly in the neighborhoods of the cities where we live. Conservation of our resources significantly enhances the quality of life of our homes and the surrounding area. We need to preserve these natural beauties for the long haul — for ourselves and for those who come after us. We need to give Earth Day a huge priority and to remember that it is not just one day a year; it is every day.An Official Fiesta San Antonio event and is put on by the Westside Development Corporation and The Earth Day Committee. Since 1996, the citywide event has enabled community members to show support for the protection of the local environment, public health, and our planet. In 2017 the Westside Development Corporation, a city-delegate agency and non-profit, was appointed fiscal sponsor for San Antonio Earth Day. With a mission to foster economic development, create healthy communities and preserve the character of our city, the WDC is looking to the city’s leadership to grow comprehensive environmental policy and programming in our communities in the near future.

Earth Day—April 22—marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Around the 1970s industries were emitting tons of smoke and sludge with little to no attention to the consequences. The idea for a national day dedicated to the environment came after witnessing major events take place at the time such as the large oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, the war in Vietnam, student organized protests all over the nation, and a lack of concern over growing environmental problems. On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to talk about fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, loss of wilderness, and extinction of wildlife in massive coast-to- coast rallies in attempt to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment.
