Debby Andersen received a grant for $7,000 to Ancestral Medicine. Debby has 18 years in the healing arts as a Pilates instructor, yoga teacher, therapist, and trainer. She is also a healer, breathwork facilitator, co-founder of a yoga & Ayurveda school, and an Ayurvedic practitioner for 13 years. Way to go Kaitlin! Kaitlin Saenz is completing her final semester of nursing school at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Kaitlin holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and has experience in both pain management and urgent care. The foundation has awarded her a $5,269.32 grant and could not be prouder of the path she has chosen and the progress she has made in her field.

Congratulations Gabriela! One of the foundation’s grantees, Gabriela Cruz-Mattos, has been admitted to the University of Hawaii Medical School and received her “white coat” at a ceremony honoring her and her classmates, signifying the start of medical training. The foundation helped Gabriela with her tuition when she pursued her Master of Public Health; she will draw from this degree in medical school on her journey to become a doctor who focuses on global health.

The foundation is funding Kaitlin Saenz with a grant of $3,336.95 for her 2026 summer semester at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi’s nursing school, where she is doing exceedingly well. She has held positions in pain management and urgent care and holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Additionally, Kaitlin served as the primary caregiver for her grandparents, selflessly supporting them during their battles with cancer and while in hospice.

Courtney Pierce received a $1,333 grant from the foundation to obtain a Synergetic Play Therapy certification, which will allow her to work with children in need of healing. Courtney is currently a Master of Social Work graduate supervisee, working to gain the necessary hours for independent licensure. Furthermore, Courtney has more extensive experience in the healing arts through the practice of yoga. She has yoga teacher training and as a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) has taught trauma-informed, Vinyasa, and Power Yoga classes. Courtney is also certified in trauma-informed yoga and has worked to provide yoga to men of color, many of whom are survivors of violence, and do not otherwise have access to yoga.

After focusing on retail management in his career and in higher education, James Chavarria is following his lifelong aspiration to become a registered nurse to serve those in need of healing. He is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi and has completed his first semester. The foundation has awarded him $2,000 for his fall semester at A&M, where he will learn from his coursework: Caring of Parents/Newborns, Professional Nursing Issues, and Nursing Care of Adults. While in his first semester, James gained valued experience from his clinicals, giving him the opportunity to perform assessments, collect vital signs, and (with supervision) administer medication – to name a few. James plans on applying for a nurse externship to expand his knowledge in a hospital setting.

In addition to her earlier grant from the foundation, Kaitlin Saenz has been given a grant for $5,222.23 for her summer semester of nursing school in pursuit of a nursing degree at Texas A&M University, adding to her degree in psychology. Kaitlin has experience as a Clinic Director and Clinic Supervisor and as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant she has worked in pain management and urgent care. In 5 years, she has acquired 10,400 patient care hours of experience in the medical field. Kaitlin was the primary caretaker for her grandparents, selflessly caring for them during their battles with cancer & time in hospice. Kaitlin has struggled with Ehlers-Danlo’s Syndrome and wants to help improve the flaws in the medical system that she has personally experienced to ensure that her patients receive the best care and support she can provide.

Brianna Marie Pedraza is currently a student at Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi and we have given her a grant of $4489.82 for her last semester towards her endeavor of becoming a registered nurse. With a will to help anyone in need and a want to heal those around her, Brianna has a passion to serve others and the Matthew Ahern Healing Arts Foundation is pleased to help her on her journey. As part of her pursuit of a bachelor’s in nursing she is taking clinicals in Costa Rica for two weeks and then will finish up her last semester with clinicals in Corpus Christi. Brianna also has a bachelor’s in science majoring in Biomedical Science with a concentration in Pre-med from Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi. In high school Brianna went through an Emergency Medical Services program, from which she gained knowledgeable skills & experience, such as: responding to calls for medical assistance, assessing and rendering first aid or life support, and preparing patients for emergency transport. She also has more than 60 clinical hours shadowing physicians within the Interventional Radiology department at Christus Spohn Shoreline, Corpus Christi, TX. Brianna is hardworking and driven; she works numerous jobs to support herself while being a full-time student. We look forward to seeing Brianna succeed.
