In observance of Juneteenth, UP Partnership’s offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. The day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of freedom, equality, and the chance for every person to thrive.

As we honor Juneteenth, we reflect on the importance of ensuring every young person has access to the opportunities, support, and resources they need to reach their full potential.

We wish our partners, colleagues, and community a meaningful Juneteenth.

One caring adult can make a lifetime of difference.

A recent story featured on KSAT 12 News highlighted the impact of mentorship through Partner Big Brothers Big Sisters South Texas, where meaningful relationships between mentors and young people are helping build confidence, strengthen mental health, and create brighter futures.

The need remains significant. Nearly 400 boys in San Antonio are currently waiting to be matched with a mentor, with the greatest need for Black and Latino men willing to serve as positive role models.

Research shows that young people with mentors are more likely to succeed academically, experience improved emotional well-being, and pursue opportunities beyond high school. These developmental relationships are a key Future Ready Bexar County Voice strategy because when young people have trusted adults in their corner, they are better equipped to thrive.

As mentor Gable Crowder shared, mentorship isn't about having all the answers—it's about showing up. Sometimes one consistent relationship can change the trajectory of a young person's life.

Applications are now open for the 2026–2027 UP Leaders of Tomorrow Fellowship, a paid leadership opportunity for young people ages 16–24 who live, work, or attend school in Bexar County.

Through this nine-month fellowship, participants will build leadership and advocacy skills, learn how decisions are made at the local and state levels, connect with community leaders, and help shape conversations that impact young people across our region.

No prior experience is required, just curiosity, commitment, and a desire to create positive change.
