Where do student parents go to college? 👀🎓

Student parents are enrolled across every part of higher education, but not always in the same places as non parenting students.

The data shows meaningful differences in enrollment across community and technical colleges, public universities, private nonprofit institutions, and for-profit colleges.

Understanding where student parents enroll gives us another piece of the bigger picture: the educational systems, resources, and degree pathways they are navigating.

Parenting can take many forms. 💙

For student parents, the journey through higher education can look different from one person to the next. That’s why how we define “parenting student” matters.

The Urban Institute recommends an inclusive definition that recognizes that parenting can include biological parents, stepparents, coparents, adoptive and foster parents, guardians, grandparents, extended family members, and sibling caregivers — and that children can be any age.

At Visitation Ministries, we want to make sure student parents know that their experience counts.

Student parents don’t always move through higher education on a straight line — and data helps show why. 🎓✨

Compared with non parenting students, student parents are more likely to begin college later, enroll part time, and return to school after already earning a degree or certificate.

These differences matter because they can shape how long the journey takes, how students move through college, and what support may be helpful along the way.

Pregnant and parenting students in Texas public colleges have protections at both the federal and state level. 🎓💙

Title IX provides a national baseline of protections for pregnant students, while Texas law includes additional state-specific protections for pregnant and parenting students.

Knowing what protections and supports are available can make higher education a little easier to navigate.

A degree can change more than one future. 🎓💙

For student parents, completing a degree can have a powerful economic impact: from increasing lifetime earnings to reducing poverty rates among single mothers.

And that impact can extend to the next generation, too. Research shows that even slight increases in parents’ earnings can positively affect their children’s future earnings.

Swipe through to see why degree completion can have an impact far beyond graduation.

Child care can be one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle for student parents. 💙

Fewer than half of U.S. colleges and universities offer on-campus child care. Even when programs are available, limited spots, long waitlists, and a lack of evening hours can make access difficult.

For parenting students, reliable child care can shape whether staying enrolled is actually possible.
