San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition In the spring of 2004, a small group met in the Whole Foods break room and discussed the plight of outside cats in San Antonio.

Our vision is to have a community where no kittens are born wild on the street, no cat capable of living in a home is lacking one, and no feral cats are wanting for food, water, and appropriate care and concern. The San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition (SAFCC) was born from that meeting and became a non-profit corporation in September of that year. On National Feral Cat Day, October 16th, 2004, SAFCC started its outreach campaign to educate the public about Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). In September of the following year, SAFCC received its tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3). In the spring of 2005, SAFCC trapped 22 cats in a condemned trailer park in Southeast San Antonio. That summer, SAFCC sent 9 cats a week to the Gladys Harborth Animal Resource Center (GHARC) for spay/neuter. By the end of 2005, GHARC had increased SAFCC’s appointments to 30 per week. In January 2006, SAFCC held its first monthly workshop to teach Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) and trained 220 people that year. In June 2006, SAFCC became a PetSmart adoption partner. In December 2006, SAFCC entered into an agreement with Animal Care Services and Purrfect Haven to do a pilot TNR Program of park cats at the Japanese Tea Garden which included the cats at Brackenridge Park. Since those early days, SAFCC has trained and TNR’ed thousands and has become the main voice and advocate for San Antonio’s community cats.

We also have our monthly TNR class to help you learn how to help community cats through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). Our free class covers the basics of trapping, transporting, and returning community cats, along with the resources you'll need to get started. No RSVP required and doors open at 11:30 am. Approach with caution. Even a friendly cat may bite or scratch when they’re scared or in pain.

If it’s safe to do so:
• Carefully place the cat in a carrier or ventilated box
• Use a towel to help calm and safely handle them
• Call the SAFCC Helpline at 210-877-9067 for guidance and care options

We are looking for volunteers who enjoy a hands-on way to make a difference for community cats! 💚 😺

Join our clinic team and help with important tasks like weighing cats in traps, checking cats in and out, and monitoring recovery after surgery. This is a fast-paced role that involves standing for extended periods, lifting up to 25 pounds, and pitching in wherever needed, including occasional trap cleaning.

Please note, this clinic is not available to the public. It is exclusively for our official Trapper Team and the foster cats in our CCAP adoption program so that we are not taking public spots at partner clinics.

No feral cat handling is required, and all training is provided. If you enjoy staying busy, working as part of a team, and making a direct impact for community cats, this volunteer opportunity is for you! Volunteers must be 18 years or older to apply.

Meet Big Mack, a distinguished gentleman with a huge personality, an even bigger purr, and exceptionally strong opinions about dinner. 🍽️✨

Big Mack hasn’t had the easiest path. Adopted in May 2025 as an FIV-positive adult, he landed back in foster care when his human became ill. On top of that, he faced a rough health patch—a painful dental infection that required extractions, a diabetes diagnosis, and a weight drop down to just 7 pounds.

Fast forward to today: Mack has bounced back in a big way! While he’s living with FIV and diabetes, this resilient guy handles his medical routine like an absolute champion:

It’s , and today’s reminder is that saving a life can be as simple as opening your bathroom door.

This morning, one of our volunteers on her morning walk watched this little guy dart into the street directly in front of a massive truck. He narrowly escaped getting hit, but then slammed headfirst into a fence and knocked himself silly. That little bonk was apparently enough to make a very spicy feral kitten catchable, and he was wrapped up in a shirt and brought to safety.

Meet Monster Truck.

He’s now settling into a bathroom, where he’s discovered that Churu and pate are considerably better than almost becoming roadkill. He’s crusty, spicy, and has some suspicious spots on his ears and feet that may be ringworm, so he’ll need medical treatment and monitoring after his unfortunate bonk.

But Monster Truck is safe.

And that’s what fosters and Good Samaritans do. Sometimes saving a life doesn’t require a spare bedroom or years of rescue experience. Sometimes it’s just a bathroom, a little patience, and the willingness to stop and help.

“Can someone trap for me?”

We hear this question all the time. While SAFCC is an all-volunteer organization and cannot send someone out to trap for you, the good news is that you don’t have to do it alone!

Whether you’re helping a colony for the first time or dealing with an urgent situation, we’re here to help you get started. We provide:

✅ Free TNR training
✅ Trap loans
✅ Helpline support every step of the way

Many community cat caretakers start with little to no trapping experience. With the right guidance and resources, you can successfully help the cats in your neighborhood get spayed or neutered and improve their quality of life.

If you are elderly, disabled, or facing circumstances that make trapping difficult, please reach out to our Helpline. We may be able to provide additional guidance based on your situation.
