Hey Project STAY Parents! Is your student looking for volunteer opportunities this summer? Here’s a few ways your student can find them more easily:

City of San Antonio Website

The city of San Antonio has a section on their website dedicated to listing volunteer opportunities. There are many opportunities, but you and your child should choose one that best suits their interests. Also, make sure to look closely at the requirements listed, as some of these are intended for adults.

Museums, and Private Institutions

Museums, and private institutions sometimes offer more specialized volunteer opportunities. Look up organizations in fields that interest your child, and see if they offer any volunteer opportunities.

Ask Around

There are lots of opportunities year-round, like spending time speaking to residents of nursing homes, caring for animals in shelters, or helping at your local religious institution. Remember to research the organization beforehand to ensure it is reputable.

Hey Project STAY Parents! Is your child trying to stand out from other college applicants by volunteering this summer? Colleges love when students commit to worthwhile activities and give back to their communities. Here’s how you can help your student keep track of all your student has accomplished:

Keep A Spreadsheet

Have your student keep a spreadsheet of their activities, including the dates and times they participated.

Get A Signed Record

If your child has other extracurriculars that require signed forms, make sure to have your child ask the organizer to sign the form.

Get A Letter of Recommendation

Some colleges ask for letters of recommendation for competitive programs. Project STAY has a post on asking for letters of recommendation here:

Hey Project STAY Students! If you need some extra cash in-between semesters, then you might be considering getting a summer job. Here’s a few tips on what to look for in a summer job and how to make the most of the experience:

Seek An Internship

If you need a job, you should seek an internship in your desired field to gain as much experience as possible. To find an internship, you can look online or approach your Student Services or Career Center for any opportunities they might have posted. Project STAY has more information on our page.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18n4oJXkAK/

Get A Seasonal Job

If you can’t get an internship in your preferred field, you should consider getting a seasonal job. Seasonal jobs are specific to summer, like lifeguard or ice cream stand attendant. These are ideal, since you don’t have to worry about having to quit once the summer’s over.

Temporarily Increase Your Hours

If you already have a job that you don’t intend to quit, then you should ask to temporarily increase your hours over the summer.

Be Honest About Your Availability

Whether you get an internship or a job outside your field, you should communicate that this is a temporary position and you intend to leave once the school year starts. Your education is your future. It should always come first.

Hey Project STAY Students, now that you’re registering for your first college semester, there’s a lot you should know before you begin. One of the most important is the timeframe you choose! Unlike in high school where you had the entire school year to work on a class, your classes are now 16 or 8 weeks long. That means that your deadlines are much tighter and you have less time to learn. Here is a breakdown of these two time frames and which one is right for you.
16 Weeks

A 16-week college course is a course that lasts over the entire semester. This class is set at the default pace, and offers a more flexible schedule that makes it easier to meet deadlines.

8-Weeks

A 8-week course covers the same material as a 16-week course, but at double the pace, and offers less time to meet deadlines. These courses usually take place over the summer, but some institutions offer them during the fall and spring semesters. Although these classes can be intimidating, they do have an advantage: you can graduate faster!

Hey Project STAY Students! Are you about to register for college classes for the first time? It is important to choose the right modality for you. “Modality” is the method by which classes meet. When it comes to deciding what type of college course to take, you should make decisions based on your learning style. Here’s a breakdown of common modalities.

In-person

An in-person class takes place in a traditional classroom with a professor and classmates. If you benefit from a physical learning environment, appreciate building connections with your classmates, or being able to receive guidance in real-time, then this is the best option for you.

Online

An online class takes place remotely and can be done via video calls, or working on assigned readings and classwork. If you live in a different area, want to save on transportation, or benefit from working at your own pace, then this is the correct class for you.

Hybrid

A hybrid class is a class that takes place both in person and online. Each class has different rules about attendance and submitting assignments, so you should check the syllabus to see if this is the right style for you.

Hey Project STAY Students! Are you taking a summer course this summer? Then here’s a few things you need to keep in mind:

Less Choice

Typically, summer courses have limited class sizes and subjects. That means that you have less choice of what to study, but you also have more attention from the professor.

Accelerated Coursework

Usually, these courses are 8 weeks long, compared to the usual 16 weeks in the fall and spring semesters. That means you have a tighter window to study, do your homework, and prepare for tests. You should plan accordingly.

It’s Better To Take Fewer Classes

Because there is so little time in these courses, it’s better to take one or two instead of your usual courseload. Remember that it’s better to do well in a few courses than to do poorly in many.

Allows You To Finish Faster

The best part about these courses is that it allows you to knock a course or two off your degree plan, which will allow you to graduate faster.
