Last Friday, we hosted our 5th Annual Venture Brunch during San Antonio Startup + Tech Week, bringing together our investors, portfolio companies, founders, and partners for one of the biggest gatherings of the Alamo Ventures community each year.

Venture Brunch is designed to put San Antonio venture in one room: the people deploying capital, the founders building ambitious companies, and the broader community helping those companies grow.

We heard from Ben Jones of JENNi, one of our portfolio founders, who shared how the company is building infrastructure that connects merchant inventory across major commerce and delivery platforms.

We were also pleased to welcome Pat Kennedy, who shared remarks on behalf of Kennedy Sutherland LLP, this year’s Venture Brunch sponsor.

And then we shared what comes next. Alamo Angels is now Alamo Ventures.

The new name reflects the evolution of our platform and the ambition ahead: investing across Texas, expanding access to venture investing, backing exceptional founders, and building a stronger venture ecosystem from San Antonio outward.

Last week, we brought the Alamo Angels community together for our September Flagship with Amit Mehta, General Partner at Builders VC and one of the original co-founders of Alamo Angels, in conversation with Marcos Resendez III.

It was a wide-ranging conversation about venture from someone who has spent years inside it: how the business of VC has evolved, what it means to invest in the AI era, and how investors should think about what comes next.

Dr. Mehta also took us inside some of the companies he has backed, sharing the stories behind the investments, what he saw early, and how those businesses developed after the check was written.

This weekend we kicked off the inaugural Women in Investing cohort at Alamo Angels. The first of five sessions brought together women from across San Antonio to build a practical foundation in personal and private market investing.

Over the next few months, this cohort moves from fundamentals to evaluating startups, building conviction, and participating in real angel deals alongside our community.

The gap in angel investing has never been about appetite or capability. It is about access. Deal flow travels through networks that were built decades ago, and the future of innovation depends on who gets funded.

Meet Sandra Montoya đź‘‹

Sandra Montoya is the Founder & CEO of Sandra Montoya Financial Solutions, where she serves as a Fractional CFO for small and medium-sized businesses while also helping individuals and families build long-term wealth through investing and financial education.

Her passion for finance is deeply personal. Sandra immigrated from Colombia to the United States at 17 years old without speaking English and began working at McDonald’s while learning a new language and adapting to a new country. What started as a dream for a better future became a career dedicated to understanding how money truly works and helping others do the same.

She went on to earn both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Finance and built more than 15 years of corporate finance experience, holding leadership roles across financial planning, treasury, accounting, and tax at Marathon Petroleum (formerly Tesoro Corporation) and NatureSweet.

Alongside her corporate career, Sandra spent more than a decade applying the same investing principles she teaches today, building a personal investment portfolio that gave her the financial flexibility to leave corporate America and launch her own firm.

Today, she combines executive financial leadership with a passion for financial education. As a Fractional CFO, she helps business owners improve cash flow, profitability, and financial decision-making. As a personal finance coach, she teaches families how to understand investing, build diversified portfolios, and create financial independence on their own terms.

Sandra believes the community offers far more than investment opportunities, it provides the perspectives and relationships that make her a stronger entrepreneur, advisor, and investor.

Ana Clara is a student-athlete at the University of the Incarnate Word, where she’s pursuing a Business degree with a double concentration in Finance and Economics. Last week, Alamo Angels hosted its flagship community gathering with Rafael Lopez, co-founder of ZenBusiness and founder of Nibbles, a current portfolio company. The conversation was led by Don Douglas of Geekdom Fund, an early investor in ZenBusiness, on what it actually takes to build and scale a venture-backed company.

Founded in Austin in 2015, ZenBusiness grew into a platform serving hundreds of thousands of small business owners and reached a billion dollar valuation, one of the more notable outcomes to emerge from the Texas.

Rather than a rehearsed retrospective, the session brought the founder and the early investor into the same room to trace the decisions that shaped that trajectory.

There was a full circle quality to it for us. We heard the arc of one company from the people who built and backed it, and through Nibbles we now get to support Rafael on what comes next.

Many thanks to Don and Rafael, and to the members who joined us. Our flagship gatherings exist to give this community direct access to the operators and investors behind real outcomes, and this was a strong example of that.

Two years ago, we made it official: Alamo Angels was opening a chapter in the Rio Grande Valley. It was a strategic commitment to one of the most underestimated innovation corridors in the United States.

But the real story started before that. It started with showing up. Listening. Building relationships on the ground. Because in early-stage investing, trust is the currency and you can’t build it from a distance.

Every year we come back, we see more founders, bigger ideas, and stronger energy. This scene is accelerating and Alamo Angels is here to make sure the right people have a seat at the table.
