Teachers stop spending your paycheck to supplement the school district.

Teachers stop spending your paycheck to supplement the school district.

There is a reason so many classrooms look different by the end of the school year than they did on the first day.

The difference is often not a larger budget.

It is a teacher opening their own wallet.

The books.

The pencils.

The markers.

The storage bins.

The decorations.

The classroom library.

The rewards.

The supplies students forgot.

The supplies students could not afford.

The little things that make a classroom feel welcoming, organized, and ready to learn.

Most people assume schools provide all of it.

Many teachers know otherwise.

The reality is that countless classrooms are improved one personal purchase at a time.

Not because teachers are required to do it.

Because they care enough to do it anyway.

That is why conversations about teacher spending often miss the point.

The issue is not whether teachers are willing to help.

Teachers have been helping for decades.

The question is why they feel they have to.

No teacher should feel responsible for furnishing, stocking, and supplying a classroom out of their own paycheck.

Yet every year, millions do exactly that.

And somehow it has become so normal that many people barely notice.

The next time you walk into a beautiful, well-stocked classroom, there is a good chance you are looking at something a teacher helped pay for themselves.

Not because they had extra money.

Because they didn't want their students to go without.

That's dedication.

But it shouldn't be an expectation.

🚨 URGENT: A proposed federal rule could limit districts' ability to use federal funds for professional learning, including conferences. This could directly impact educators serving Texas' 1.3M+ emergent bilingual students. TABE urges educators, leaders, and advocates to review the proposal and submit public comments before July 13.
