Shields for Kids 501(c)(3) is made up of police officers who provide compassion, care, and assistance to kids in need while building strong connections of trust with the communities they serve. On behalf of police officers from the San Antonio Law (SA Law) men’s competitive law enforcement softball team, I would like to welcome you to Shields for Kids.com. The Shields for Kids’ slogan is “Providin
g 10-11 for Kids in need”. 10-11 is a police radio code for requesting backup or needing help, which is what our organization provides for needy children. Shields for Kids consist of police officers from various agencies that play for the SA Law softball team. The officers on our team, which range from patrolmen, detectives, sergeants, lieutenants, and captains, wish to provide a wide variety of assistance to kids in need that they cannot give while “on duty” due to the obvious dangers that come with being in a full police uniform. This danger does not allow our officers to give 100% of the attention needed to provide the additional assistance the officer feels a child may need during their shift. Thanks to your support, these officers in their “off duty” status get to provide assistance to kids in need in the form of presents for underprivileged children during the holidays, a teddy bear for a child at the children’s shelter, gifts for sick children staying at the Ronald McDonald house, or even an exhibition kick-ball game for children with disabilities, all without worrying about being targeted for simply being a police officer, such as the case of Valentine (Val) Lopez, the founding coach of SA Law in 1977. The ultimate goal is for our officers to interact with kids outside of their “on duty” status, in a safe environment, so that they experience the feeling of warmth and compassion that the officers strive to communicate to children on a daily basis while reaffirming the positive role model that all police officers wish to provide our youth.
