The United States is home to people of many different communities, cultures, faiths, and traditions. To serve society effectively and respectfully, police departments participate in cultural-awareness and community-sensitivity trainings that helps officers better understand the customs, practices, and social contexts of the diverse communities they interact with. Such efforts support more informed, respectful, and constructive engagement between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
For the past several years, HSS San Antonio has facilitated such educational sessions to help raise awareness and understanding of basic Hindu practices and cultural norms. Topics discussed have included simple yet meaningful aspects of daily and spiritual life. Such as why footwear is removed before entering certain spaces, the significance of the tilak, or red dot on the forehead, and sindoor in the hair parting, and the cultural meaning behind greeting one another with “namaste” and folded hands instead of a handshake.
One of the earlier programs was even conducted during a major Hindu festival - Holi, offering participants an opportunity for firsthand cultural exposure and understanding. Earlier this week, the sixth session in this ongoing effort was designed specifically for cadets in training. Held at the beautiful Shirdi Sai Baba Temple of San Antonio the cadets loved the prasad (food and desserts) served after the session.
HSS is grateful to have supported the initiative for mutual understanding, harmony, and community partnership.
