HIS Breast Cancer Awareness was created to make sure men facing breast cancer have a place to turn for information, education, and support.

After Vicki Wolf’s own experience with breast cancer and her brother Harvey’s diagnosis, they saw firsthand how often men were missing from the conversation.

Their story became a mission: raise awareness, break the stigma, and remind every man facing breast cancer that he is not alone. 💙

About 1 in 20 men with breast cancer carry a pathogenic variant in BRCA1 or BRCA2.

That statistic is an important reminder that breast cancer can have a hereditary component in men, too. Understanding the role of genetics can help bring more attention to hereditary cancer risk and challenge the idea that breast cancer is only a women’s disease.

Genetic testing and genetic counseling are connected, but they’re not the same thing.

Genetic testing looks for inherited changes in your genes that may affect cancer risk. Genetic counseling helps you understand whether testing may be appropriate, what your results could mean, and what questions to consider next.

Knowing the difference can make the process feel a little clearer, especially when family history is part of the conversation.

Men with a harmful BRCA2 variant may face up to a 7.1% risk of developing breast cancer by age 70, compared with about 0.1% of men in the general population.

Knowing your family’s cancer history and discussing genetic counseling with a healthcare professional can help you better understand your risk.

A quick breast and chest self-awareness check is not just about one spot.

Use the pads of three fingers to check across the chest, behind the ni**le, and into the armpit area. You’re looking for anything new or unusual, like a lump, swelling, ni**le change, or skin change.

A self-check does not diagnose cancer, but it can help you notice when something is worth bringing up with a healthcare provider.

A little preparation can help you get more out of a genetic counseling appointment.

Before you go, gather what you can about your personal health history and your family’s cancer history, including the type of cancer and age at diagnosis. If someone in your family has already completed genetic testing, bring a copy of their results when possible.

You do not need to know every detail. Start with what you have and bring the questions that matter most to you.

Genetic counseling can help you understand your inherited cancer risk, consider whether genetic testing may be appropriate, and learn what the information could mean for you and your family.
